Here are PLD + NIN's sell points:

PLD: Better Hate Control
PLD holds hate better than any tank in most situations. PLD can Cover and protect anyone in emergencies. Shield Bash interrupts mob spells/abilities. PLD's 2 hour is a very good for crowd hate control.

NIN: Less MP for Heals and Debuff
NIN requires much MUCH less healing comparing to PLD. NIN can debuff, assuming NIN is wearing very good gear and use every debuff ninjutsu available.

Overall I would say NIN is more efficient for exp parties. They require much less mana consumption for healing and they can debuff. However all that blinks and ninjutsu powders will burn a big hole through the NIN's pocket. A good NIN spends about as much as an average RNG per hour on consumables. NIN equipment is more expandsive too.

I have to give credit to Slayerk, Mithran Pally who was able to keep hate even when I had to use Benediction. Mob never left him for a second, I've never seen that before O_O

Okay I've seen these twice and no one can ever tell me what they mean.

What does the symbol by someone's name that is green and yellow, and looks like nothing so much as an arrow fletching, mean?

Here's a question I've been wondering about lately. When your checking for someone to fill a party with, you see the names on your screen with either a green/yellow/red dot which, when you press on the name, usually gives you a message like LVL 52 WHM/BLM @5000/{exp point}{please}/{Japanese Party}{ok}/etc...
how do I put a message like that beside my name? And what is the difference with the green/yellow/red markers?

Go to SEARCH on the menu, and then there should be something down the bottom called "Edit Comment". That's where you type in your search comments (the things you've been reading). Before you can type in your comments, you have to choose from the following four colors:

The green dot is for EXP Party. The Red dot is for Quest/Missions. The blue dot is Item Related and the yellow dot is Other.

Hope that helps you out.

I think that means it's a temporary account. They use them for events and stuff. I saw a thread on the general forum about it.

Ah, I saw my first one of those last night. Yoshimusa, I believe, was the bearer. Saw him in South Gustaberg while helping an LS member hunt Lizzy.

Looks like this, right?

That symbol in Japanese culture indicates a beginner or a training-level permission or activity (Japanese drivers' learner permits have this insignia on them). In this case, Square uses them to denote players on trial memberships for press events or public demonstrations.

Unfortunately, you can't have multiple messages, so many people just pick the red or yellow dot since they're the most visible. By the time you're of an appropriate level to know to use Search Comments, you've probably done all the solo quests you can do, so trying to get a group quest done would equally merit the red or yellow dot.

The blue dot is not very visible at all in searches. I wouldn't use it.

As a note, the number of Japanese players that use Search Comments is a lot higher than those that don't, so using Search Comments makes you a more favorable candidate to Japanese parties.

While we're discussing this, I should probably talk about something else you see often in search comments: "X", "O", a double-circle, and a triangle. The Japanese often use these to indicate status or approval/disapproval. "X" (batsu) would obviously be disapproval, or a lack of a particular status (for example, (Erase): X - no Erase!). "O" (pi-pon) is ideal or approval ( (food): O ). Triangle means "so-so". A Japanese player might use this to indicate that he/she would be open to doing something, but would prefer otherwise ( (Yuhtunga Jungle) (party): O / (Yhoator Jungle) (party): ^ *assume that's a triangle). The double-circle has two-concentric circles, and that indicates a very positive condition, moreso than "O".

Now, we don't get the fontset that the Japanese use, but you do still have O and X at your disposal. To make it look more authentic, use the Auto-Translate menu, and go to Controller. In the second page of the Controller menu, you'll find items showing the four PSX buttons. Hit one of those, and then delete the "button" text. Sorry, no double-circle...but this helps. :D

I know some bored individual somewhere out there has listed every single auto-translate word available.
(C'mon, I know you're out there)

Does anyone know where such a list can be found?

^^ I wanna have fun with some of my macros.

About the cursed items, I quoted this from our LS website. All credits goes to Rhayn, PLD73:

---Quote---
List of Cursed Items:
http://www.akuadvanced.com/cursed.html

To briefly explain, when you get an abjuration for a specific equipment slot, you must acquire the matching cursed gear for that slot. After this, take both the Abjuration and the Cursed gear to the NPC Alphollon C Meriard in the church in Northern San d'Oria. Trade both the abjuration and cursed gear to him, the curse will be removed, and you'll get the uncursed item back.

Both the abjuration and final product are Rare/Ex, but the cursed gear itself is made from various high-level crafts.
---Quote---

Btw, abjurations are Rare/Ex scrolls dropped off God HNMs.

I have a follow-up to this. Do PC or JP users have a more expanded version of the words that can be auto-translated? Or have some few very intelligent people found a way to add auto-translated words to their PC's vocabulary?

I use PS2 and I have seen JP /shouts in Jeuno that include translated words and mob names (such as NMs) that I cannot find within the words my PS2 lists in the translator.

HNM = Honorary Notorious Monster

It means the NM grants you a title after you kill it.

JPN players claim faster because the servers are physically located closer to them, thus giving them a lower latency advantage. They see the spawn a fraction of a second faster and thus have an advantage.

This has been addressed several times in this forum, and some *very* convincing explanations have been advanced for why this is simply not true. I don't remember it well enough to give all the details - could someone with a premium account please dig it up? It talks about how events on the game are timed on different 'tracks', which are spaced at different intervals of time (up to 24s (IIRC), which is why when you heal, it takes about that amount of time for a 'tick').

All in all, the explanation demonstrates how the game is structured to cancel out any potential advantage that the Japanese would have from physical server location, and I've never seen anyone prove it wrong.

Cheers!

I don't think this is correct. If you kill Stray Mary, you get a title.

Well, if you don't have an advanced job, WAR would probably do fine. Better than MNK. You can at least use Berserk at 30. :)

Well, it was a nightmare for me. Others may have had better results, but I dunno.

You could make the argument that since Combo does pure physical damage, a SA-Combo could do more damage than a Wasp Sting with a much higher weapon skill cap. I would argue that using MNK is more dangerous since as a THF, you're likely to give the mob a lot more TP without giving it more damage.

Yes, from all the research I've been able to do into this subject, Winawer is absolutely correct, as are the people who have stated similar things on the main forum. There are several different tracks. Furthermore, actions like Provoke are sent back to the server with a "timestamp" to determine which player used Provoke first. Let me try to dig up a couple of the threads.

Agree, You don't get any title for killing any of the gods except Kirin (kirin captivator is the title) Also never heard HNM called Honorary Notorious monster before.

You get title for killing easy HNM like steelfleeced (hornsplitter) and serket, but not amikiri or Tyranous Tunnok (they are basically Serket on steroid and drop claw also).

The explanation might be that amikiri and Tunnok are lottery pop of the scorpions around their zone while Serket is a just a scorpion pop in Garlaige where there are no scorpion mobs. Hence the game considers Serket a rarer event than amikiri or Tunnok though the latter two are harder. but again Mary is just a lottery pop of those sheeps around her so I don't really know how it work.

Some other HNM that give titles are

Roc (roc star), Sigmurgh (sigmurgh poacher), Serket (serket breaker ) fafnir and Nidhogg (faf and nid slayer) Voluptious vivian (vivisector) Cassie (cassinova,)Aspidochelone (A. Sinker)

Normal NM give titles too like

Stray mary, the 7 skulls in Eldieme (Skullkrusher), the Royal Demon NMs in castle vazhl (Hellsbane), Cacrot Rapido (Cactrot Desacelerador)

Some mob considered HNM (in that they're very hard and drop stuff people want) that does not give titles are

the 4 gods (genbu, seiryu, suzaku, byakko), Tunnok and amikiri, The bomb queen, maybe Hakutaku.

I'm pretty sure you have to be the shell owner, cause I (owning CFoneAfour) can set the message, but my friend who has a sack cannot

actually you almost answered your own question. Its quite easy just type /lsmes set <insert message here>. LS leader and sackholders alike can set LS message. I am not the leader of my LS but a sackholder. I change it all the time.
