This thread has worked out really well.

I think you are referring to 'HNM' which was discussed earlier in this thread.

Maybe somebody with wayyyyyy too much time on their hands could compile the questions and answers, put them into FAQ format, then let the originator of this thread update the original post?

Then sticky it! =^D

If anyone has any questions regarding bots or some of the more technical aspects of the game, I offer my expertise. I'm a software engineering student and I've actually built a few "bots".

Well, I was going to ask why I was a Sage, and then I posted, and became a Scholar again, but I look and now I'm a Sage again.

Go figure. =P

Sure, pay me my salary cause I'll have to quit my job. lol I'm all for updating it if someone wants to compile them for me.

BTW how do we request this to be stickied? Elu, Tse? Do we need to talk to an Admin? Haggan?

BCNM= Burning circle notorious monster (you got it right ^^)
HM= I think you're refering to a HNM we agreed on Hyper Notorious Monster (people say different things) but it's basically a really hard NM. Which answers your next question of HNM group. You have to have one to defeat them (read: Tiamat) Usually these people are all high lvls and are very organised and do these for the sweet drops they give. And yeah, it's at the beginning of the thread at some point

I'm the queen of questions. :)

Does anyone know of a good guide that details mobs' associations with elements? I know this is going to seem n00bish, but I feel like I'm not being as effective with buffs as I should be, so I need to get a better handle on what goes with what. I know gobs = Barfira and crabs = Barwater, but I'm not so sure about what's effective against other common mobs.

Battle of the boards?
#162 Nov 11 2004 at 3:01 PM Rating: Decent
I have a list for FAQs.com though i think i might not be complete but it helps.

Basically whatever element the mob uses u can' protect among that

Bats are a bit tricky but they have a dark attribute so they resist dark spells and are weak vs light and are weak vs wind for some reason

Skeletons use ice spikes so they tend to resist ice spells along w/ dark spells (completely ineffictive on them). but are weak vs light and fire and healing spells

One more would be worms.. weak vs wind and light but are strong against earth so u will have a hard time sticking slow on them (earth based debuff).

It takes a while but u get the hang of it

Going back to the very first question asked in this thread.

I came across some interesting info.

The question was what do the 7 character stats influence?

Here's a more complicated answer I came across.

Certain stats, such as Strength and Vitality, have a correlating stat, like Attack and Defense. The way these work is more complicated. It has to do with how "random" numbers are determined in battle.

We'll use Vitality as an example, since its something I'm particularly familiar with as a Paladin.

Your character has a probability curve associated with their physical strength. It "weights" the dice, so to speak, meaning that damage done is more likely to be equal to the values in the middle of the curve rather than the ends.

Your Vitality determines where that curve is on damage scale. The higher your vitality, the lower the values on your curve will be. For example, lets say Paladin A has a Vitality of 8, and the possible damage associated with his curve ranges from 2-5. Paladin B however has a Vitality of 9. His curve might range from 1-4.

That's overly simplistic, and understand that my example isn't neccessarily representative of the precise calculations the game uses, but it should give you a basic idea.

To simplify, Vitality lowers the amount of damage you take overall.

Defense adds a second layer to this. What defense does is load the dice in your favor, so to speak. Rather than changing the position of the curve on the damage axis, it changes the shape of the curve along the probability axis (yes I realize this would be much easier with visual aids, but I have none =P ).

Meaning that the higher your defense, the better chance you have of receiving reduced damage.

For example, Paladin A has 21 defense and Paladin B has 22 defense. Assuming that both Paladins now have the same vitality, Paladin B has better chances of taking less damage than Paladin A.

To summarize, Vitality lowers your overall damage taken, and Defense then increases your chance of taking less damage.

Strength and Attack work in the same way. Strength raises the amount of damage you can do overall and Vitality raises your chances of doing more damage each regular hit.

Accuracy, Ranged Accuracy, Evasion, Magic accuracy, etc, all follow the same pattern, but are further complicated by the addition of combat and magic skill levels. Nevertheless the same rules apply. The "basic" stat, such as Dexterity raises or lowers the overall curve, the secondary stat changes the shape of the curve in your favor.

Complicated, but I found it interesting. Lesson taken from this? Generally speaking, raising your basic stats benefits you more on the whole than raising your extra stats.

Which isn't to say neccessarily that you should hold onto that Vit+1 armor forever, just because the armor available for the next 10 levels doesn't have it.

It just requires some experimentation. ^^

I think Zylle's question was more along the lines of what elemental attacks the different mob classes use, so she can use her bar spells appropriately.

Supposedly the element that its weaken to tells you about what element it's strong to, ultimately what element are the base of its moves. For a partial list of mob and their weaknesses consult the Brady guide. For example, say if crabs are weak against thunder, then its strong element is water so you bar water. Though alot of them are harder to guess, like onions are weak against everything so we don't usually use any bar. Sentient mobs like Yags and Orc's damage are more base on their jobs rather than elemental but certain moves are the same for all of them no matter what jobs (like the yagudo high kick that stun) Sometime the crystal it dropped gives you a hint of the element the moves are based on though not always.

Say crawers dropped earth crystals so you would think to bar that element but as a whitemage I used barwater against crawler type mob and I know I'm not the only one. Many high levels whms both Jpn and English do this because one of its moves, the sticky thread is supposedly water based. Its not confirmed and I don't even know if it makes a difference but its 1 sec out of my time and better on then not IMHO. Otherwise against crawler just barpoisondra because its other move does poison. So usually there's no real set of list to adhere to, just pay attention to mobs and their moves and bar what you think the move is based off of. Sometimes its not even worth the time to bar anything.

Where(Here or in-game) can i find a lvl-13&up party? I really need a static one!!!
#168 Nov 14 2004 at 2:32 AM Rating: Good
Check the dunes.

It's difficult to get a static at that level though, and idealy a static will be full of people you know well and have partied with numerous times.

I would recommend waiting on a static until at LEAST your second time through the dunes (i.e. on another job).

But that's just my opinion. If you get a static together now, and it works out, great!

^^

How about the answer to the ultimate question instead?

Douglas Adams rocks.

Okay...

This is a wierd question, but an important one nevertheless for me.

Does Herb Pastoral and Barpoisonra stack?

I always feel bad if I have a question to post without an answer to a previously question to post with it, but unfortunately I don't know the answer to Nights question.

In any event, two things. It was recently very forcefully pointed out to me that the renkei chart I was using was inaccurate in a couple of areas. Could someone provide me with a link to a more accurate one?

Also, I've always wondered, is there any actual pattern or logic behind how renkei work? I spent some time looking for patterns last night, but while I found some general rules a comprehensive system escaped me.

What? HOW much time did I spend staring at an SC chart looking for cryptic patterns and hidden lore? Um... two hours... >.>

Okay, so I was a bit OCD last night. So? ^.^

[Mental note: Nata should really get more sleep. He's gone silly in the head today.]

Oooh, one final question.

Wintaru, can I have a cookie? ^^

If I am not mistaken it does, just like Mages Ballad and Refresh Stack. Could be wrong but 75% sure that it does.

Hey Nata!

Got a link for ya of someone who actually FILMED it (probably with the program Fraps). Remember, you can only do this trick on PC.

The link is:
