Hey folks,

Was browsing Slashdot.org (geek website) a few moments ago when I saw an article pertaining to us. Now, I'm reserving the right to be cynical and jaded, but it's definitely interesting. Here's the link: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3147729

After reading it, I admit to going over to our beloved IGE site and checking on stuff. Normal procedure for me to check on it when someone brings up RMT/IGE/etc. (Relax, don't worry, only things I buy online are books and movies from Amazon or B&N.) Noticed that IGE had less to offer then they did last time I checked. I forget the date that I last checked, but I find myself almost hoping that Squenix is actually doing right this time.

I think its a step in the right direction but, thats only one of them. If you do a google there are alot of them to many too count. All they're going to do is start new char's or buy them an start again. I think that SE will never be able to stop it completely but they can put a dent in it.

P.S.
This is just IMO so please dont flame me.

Hey, I'm here on Earth. Doesn't matter if I wasn't. I was passing along info I found. Sorry if I might have burst that little blissful bubble of willful ignorance.

Probably, but I've got my fingers crossed that they won't be.

I've noticed at least 3 servers where they are out of gil.

They are only offering the 2mil package for Bismarck, several servers have lower amounts available than usual.

We'll see how it goes, I guess...

I am noticing as of late a very encouraging trend.

PC Gamer magazine recently took out farmer ads

Following this Mythic has published this:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e196/arragain/dontbuy.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e196/arragain/mythic.jpg
(in case the pictures get taken down due to high bandwidth usage, I've copied the text:
"Mythic Entertainment, a longstanding and outspoken critic of practices such as "gold farming" and secondary market sales of virtual assets, proudly joins PC Gamer in their stance against companies who look upon MMOs as the "virtual gold rush" of our era.
In the interest of our players, we will reduse to advertise in any magazine that features ads from such companies. We call upon other MMO publishers to join us in this policy. We will also continue to design game systems to thwart these organizations and their unwelcome activities in our MMOs.
Show your support and don't buy from farmers!")

I've gone on MMORPG.com tonight and reloaded the main page roughly 20 times, other pages 5-10 times... it took me all that time to find a single powerleveling banner, and it was some site I never heard about (didn't find an IGE ad as of yet).

That part of me who always keeps some optimism even when the war seems lost is kicking the *** of the pessimist part of me ! >.>

The above article is total crap. When that moron has some actual {fact}s to write about, I'd love to hear them. Right now, he's got nothing more than speculation on the level any noob could gather by soliciting peoples' opinions with a shout in Port Jeuno.

You know, REAL reporters do things like call sources, ie IGE, Square Enix, etc. And even if they don't get replies back, they interview anyone who seems to have some authority on the subject, and say things like "SE declined to comment," etc. Now maybe 1up isn't interested in offering news articles, per se. Maybe all they want to print is, you know, crap. I'm honestly not familiar enough with the site to say. While the above article would make for an interesting forum post, it's about as much "article" as the above post which points us to it.

Sad but true the way i see it is

1) their new year so its their days off
2) when the gil went dry it was about the first to the 3rd of the month. (time most ppl get paid and ppl that buy gil would buy it then)
3) the price of their gil was almost down to $5 for 1mil
4) give it a couple weeks and all the site's will be back up and fully restocked >.<

Maybe i'm wrong and i hope that I am but I dont see them giveing up on their sorce of money makeing.

Here's hopeing that SE did pull it's head from it's Azz and got rid of them but dont hold your breath cause it's not likely /sigh

From: FINAL FANTASY XI
Feb. 9, 2006 03:45
------------------------------------------------------------
RMT Countermeasures
------------------------------------------------------------
Since the end of last year, item values have risen
astronomically on all Worlds due to the manipulation of prices
by a small percentage of the player base. The development
team and the GMs carried out a detailed investigation of this
problem, and discovered the existence of a group using illicit
methods to produce large amounts of gil that are later sold
in the real world (Real Money Trading). We would like to take
this opportunity to outline the measures that have been taken
to correct this issue.

Based on the results of this investigation, more than 700
accounts among those found to be involved in large-scale RMT
operations have been terminated. We will continue to monitor
accounts suspected of dealing in gil created or obtained in an
unfair manner.

Thanks to these measures, more than 300 billion gil has been
removed from circulation, and the overly inflated prices of
items have begun to fall to more realistic levels.

Furthermore, emergency maintenance has already been performed
on all worlds for the purpose of implementing RMT
countermeasures. This maintenance took place over two stages,
starting on January 17th.

As has been previously stated, acts of RMT will not be
tolerated in FINAL FANTASY XI, and any violations of the user
agreement will be dealt with severely. We would like to assure
our players that all efforts are being made to ensure a fair
playing experience.

We hope to have your continuing understanding and cooperation
in creating a Vana'diel that everyone can enjoy.
------------------------------------------------------------

I guess we can only wait and see how it pans out. I don't hold out a lot of hope, but it's nice that they acknowledged the prices going so wonky.

If one is the paranoid type, under the assumption that SE and RMTers might be dealing with each other, this could be a simple ploy to create rarity and make the prices rise.

Well. That's eating my words if I've ever seen it :x I still think this was a dumb article, but the guy was right, and I was wrong XD Mind you, I'm pleased, removing 300 billion gil from circulation is omgwtfYES.

Whoa man, whoa. I was NOT giving you the thumbs up about your inability to succeed in a game, I was just criticizing an article which I thought had no content or news to it. Your need to cheat by spending real money is not only pathetic, it's the reason why gilsellers exist in the first place. If someone will buy it, someone's gonna come along to sell it to them. Pick up a crafting guide, a farming guide, camp an NM, whatever you need to do, just stop messing up my game with your lameness.

Did anyone else notice that SE really could have done nothing but release that statement, and the same thing would happen? I'm not saying this is the case, but think about it: RMT sites raise prices, people rush to the AH selling everything of value temporarily lowering prices on items, SE appears to have done something. I really hope they HAVE done something and will continue to, but so far have seen little to no evidence of that...

I read the article as well and I wish it was true (or effective) but go to IGE or any of the other gilselling sites and you'll see that after the New year they are right back in bussiness. Whatever SE did it isn't working.

It's not going to stop all RMT, but IGE had been without gil to sell on Bismarck for several days. And I think prices for gil have skyrocketed because SE plugged the exploits.

All SE has to do now is wait for the gilsellers to amass more gil, then ban them again.. and again.. and again..

I will admit, that as of today, I still saw at least 4 Toms in Gusgen; not to mention other favourites of old. So they're certainly still around, at least some of them. I will also say that not all prices have been going down; in fact, some have still been going up (just take a look if you don't believe me).

I'm inclined to believe that some progress was made myself, and I am glad for that. Do I believe SE will ever totally get rid of gilsellers? Hell no. The lust for money and easy gil are too strong of lures to totally shut something like that down. But any progress is good progress, and if they truly have taken that much gil out of circulation, then I applaud them.
