I have been officially saddened and pissed off today.
I was looking for a party with my level 63 samurai, and suddenly I got a /tell in japanese. Trying to be as polite as possible I said
"{I'm sorry.}{I don't' speak any Japanese}; ;"
I didn't get a reply for a while, then finally:
"I want japanese."
I couldn't believe it at first, so I replied with
"{English}{No thanks.}?; ;"
He replied with:
"yes."

I would just like to know why people are so biased? I have never refused anyone a party due to their language or country of origin. I would probably not even refuse a gil seller.

This has never happened to me before, so I am kind of shocked. I have heard my friends say they don't want japanese parties, but I have always argued with them and stuck up against them.
So, why are people so mean and biased?
; ; >.< ?

**edit**: Also was wondering if anyone knew how to say something along the lines of "why are you biased towards english people, I am not biased towards you" in Japanese ; ;

try answering back in French. :x

seems most JP Onry types are just NA No Thanks types.

seriously though, you have to consider that there are immature racist douchebags everywhere. i guarantee that if you are the only RDM, or god forbid a BRD, you will get plenty of invites from people with JP PT and NA No Thanks in their /seacom, the same as the western racists will grudgingly invite a JP if the job is the right fit.

another thing i've heard, someplace on this board, in fact, is that to a lot of JP its kind of a headache to try and communicate with english speaking players. it could be that they don't like auto-trans, it could be that they are not comfortable using english, or it could be that they spend all day thinking in english at work or in school, and simply do not want to bring a 'work skill' into their off time entertainment. i.e. it makes them unable to relax as they want to.

its this last that i latch on to when i encounter what you describe. it allows me to not feel slighted, and to continue to appreciate their right to enjoy the game in the manner they wish, since it is, in the final analysis, a means of entertainment.

even if the actual situation is the first, in which the player refusing you is just a 12 year old with an anti-western chip on his shoulder, it comforts me to fool myself into the latter situation, and lets me get the moral high ground when i get "NA No Thanks" and can glibly respond "Understood w See You Again ok?"

Communication besides using auto translator.

to explain battle tactics, random helpful info, or just random chatter

Well, Stereotypes are one factor,a very important too, but not everyone not the only reason.

But communication, which is a important part of team-play, is another factor.

Lets be honest, since the Auto-translators can't translate everything and having someone who can't understand (or partialy understand) the commucation in the team, it can be a burden.

Ex: You see a n00b japanese ranger, how can you explain to him on how to do his job right? The example can be twisted into the opposite too

-Telling a blm not to overnuke
-Telling a whm not to toss a big cure on a nearly dead-puller when he's coming back to camp.

A long while ago, in one of those party in sky, (Pld(me)/whm/rdm/Sam/Sam/Blm), the Rdm, who was Japanese, just decide to stop refreshing me( =/) for some reason out of the blue. How could the issue be solve with a Auto-translator? The basic concept of the Auto-translator isn't enough sometime to get things straight.

My suggestion is to pick up a little Japanese phrasebook and memorize a few "set" sentences and such. In my case, I have studied Japanese when I was in college so I am able to have basic conversations. Even though they realize that I'm not fluent, the fact that I can make a few responses in Japanese impresses them. Of course, from there they talk to their other J-Pals and word gets out that you are cool to party with because you can at least understand some of what they say or are at least friendly/familiar with their language and style.

If nothing else, pick up the basics book because Japanese is a fun language to learn anyway. ^_^

*Stealth White Mage Edit*: In Japan, English is taught as a mandatory second language. Most kids get about 6 years of it not including college. That said, as it was mentioned above before, they may not want to feel like catering to English any more after being at school or work. But in my experience, if you show just a little bit that you appreciate or have taken the time to learn even a few phrases in Japanese, they will loosen up considerably.

I got a tell once asking me to join a party in squiggles, and when I replied with the auto translate I got:

Him: {English}?
Me: Hai
Him: {That's too bad}

And never heard from him again. Definately a slap in the face.

I just figure if they want to be narrow minded, in a videogame nonetheless, I don't really want to be in your party anyways.

I usually continue the conversation with:
Me: your loss @s$hole, i hate you rasist nips anyway.

I don't think they get that but I'll try to find out how you say it nipponese so they will understand it.

What an excellent way to handle the situation, racism always solves the problem.

Oh don't be like that, if you have to know I'm asian as well, so if anything I'm a nationalist. They don't understand what I'm saying anyways, not like I can auto-translate that sentance....

If they want to act all high and mighty then ***** them, no need to be civil with people with dismiss you just because you don't speak their language. Rasist? Maybe a little but how are they acting that is any better?

Do two wrongs make a right? I never thought that deep before, I just wanted to lash out. And why shouldn't I? You reject or kick players for a good reason (ie they suck, the job is filled, the pt disbanded, another player said yes while you were afk etc.). Rejecting someone because they don't speak your language is not one of them

Lets see when you would need to chat that is out of the scope of autotranslate.....
When a party is going smoothly their shouldn't really be that much talking anyway, the only time you really need to talk to someone (not using auto-translate) is when people don't know what they are doing.

I've pt'd with 5 JPs before with no problems. They would yap away in japanese, and I would pull the first xp mob, run back, set up to sata or whatever i do. I have pt'd in all NA and we didn't say more than 10 lines each (most were "congrats!" "good job!" "let rest for a bit" all things that can be adequetly expressed in autotranlate) because we were too busy killing stuff.

If you want to make small talk you always have your LS equiped, you can still make and recieve limited praise from others, and still express yourself (via /em) just fine without language barriers, all this crap about "talking with autotranslate is too stressful" is just a lame excuse to cover up their steorotypes about us.

Why does everyone think this? Alot of Americans, myself included think that most of the japanese that play ths game are mindless zombies who have no life. If that sterotypes me as a god, I am gonna drop out of college and play FFXI all day

I don't see how them acting high and mighty justifies your racial slurs.

The one situation I mentioned that I experienced hurt to be sure, but I just said {See you again!} and left it at that. You don't know why they don't want to party with you other than what the auto translate function says which is limited in what it can express. Maybe they don't like you because your english speaking, maybe they just want to party with Japanese only, maybe they have another reason entirely. I don't think your knee-jerk reaction is the way to go.

I also don't see how you being asian has any bearing. Last I knew, asians didn't refer to each other using those slurs, nor does using them make you a nationalist. You're still a bigot in my eyes.

Wint then you better leanr what a bigot is. Cause Bukkakr is not a bigot from her statements. She is only rude to people who are rude to her. Bukkakr has willingly partied with Japanese people, she does not lump all japanese people in one group. All she does is make rude comments to people who treat her badly.

Is that right or wrong? Thats another issue. But she certainly not a bigot.

Ok maybe bigot was the wrong term:

Dictionary.com wrote:
big·ot ( P ) Pronunciation Key (bgt)
n.
One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

Not really what I was going for.

Dictionary.com wrote:
Racist
2: discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion

Bingo.

Just in case anyone calls me on the term "Nip":

wiktionary wrote:
Nip

(derogatory, racial slur) a person of Japanese origin

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Nip

Sorry, I still think it's wrong to use this term in any light. The fact that she's partied with Japanese people in the past does not condone the use of a racial slur. Hence she becomes racist in my mind.

So, when I LFG and have "JP PT No thanks. NA ONRY" does that make me openly racist to the elitist scum?

:D

...dirty nips.
#23 Feb 23 2006 at 1:03 PM Rating: Excellent
Well, "ONRY" is questionable, but I don't see any slurs there Smiley: grin

/forum police off.

I just don't have much tolerance for that kind of thing, goes back to elementary school when someone called my step sister a n*****. He was a bit bloody when I was done with him.

Funny thing is I put that in my sea all comment once and the next 2 minutes i get an invite from a JP party in GC......as a thf no less.

Wint: I really don't care if they think I'm an *** or not, they started it with their exclusive "JP onry" crap. There are right reasons to reject someone and their is a right way to do it, as I have said before.

My reaction might be kneejerk but I when i'm slighted I let you know, I'm not going to sit back and take it.
