MentorsFollow

It was come to my attention long ago that people complain about the noobs in the game, which has brought me to a possible idea; Why not help instead? I was thinking of creating an LS called "Mentors" in which the high levels with nothing better to do than to admire their own armor would join the LS and be a symbol of hope in a manner. The type of LS which can offer information and PL's and such.

Of course this would not be a full time LS, but as you know someone with mentor status just doesn't seem to do too much in the way of really big events. But you know, when you're bored one day, nothing better to do, pop in the LS, see if anything is going on someone would need help with, and also if you needed help yourself. This however would not include NM camps for anything other than Rare/EX items only because i'd hate to see the LS become an excuse for people to use us to make money.

Thoughts?

1) someone who listens to advise is not a noob that causes complaint. this LS will not help the idiots that need it.

2) noobism is largely caused by PLing.

i have to agree with the above poster. PLing is what makes newbs into noobs. There are things that people need to get done on their own and learn things for themselves, if everything is handed to them as soon as they enter the game, they're going to miss important aspects of the game. besides that, 99/100 higher levels don't help anyone with anything unless there's something in it for them, or a good friend needs something.

It's a good thought though, rate up for the idea

The purpose of many of the social LS is to teach a new player how the game works. So if u find a good social LS one with new and vetran players, usually u learn the ropes. So just try to find a good LS and you should be fine. It is a good idea w/o a PL cuz usually PL is no good for newbies

The help idea wasn't fully aimed at PL however, but also help events. Ex. people with incomplete PM's, where someone can join up. Though I suppose you're right and it's all pipe dreams since most high lvls just aren't interested. oh well. ^^

Actually... most high levels aren't interested in holding peoples hands and doing everything for them, for things they had to work hard to accomplish once.

I wonder how many people nowadays actually have to do rank 5 parties, Genkai 1 item parties that aren't being PL'd, or hell even G2 without a PL.

That's not to say nobody wants to help but there's a huge difference in helping vs doing the whole thing for you.

/rant off

PLing does not create noobs!

It's important to make the distinction between a newbie and a noob.

All people who are starting out are newbies by default. They are new players, and they know basically jack squat about the game. And the know they know jack squat. And they want to learn more. So when a high level person is willing to give advice, they listen. They ask questions. They learn, and get better, and eventually they stop being newbies.

Noobs are people who are ignorant and do not care. They think they know things when they don't, or they simply don't care to know anything about the game. They want to do what they want, they don't believe they should cooperate with other players, and if anyone tries to help them play better with friendly advice, they either ignore it or take it as an insult. Barring some drastic personality shift, noobs will remain noobs forever.

PLing doesn't, therefore, make newbies into noobs, at least not the way I look at it. Obviously it's a question of definitions, so if you have some other way of defining the noob vs. newb dichotomy then that's another matter XD I actually learned the most in my powerleveled parties as a newbie, because I could ask the people PLing questions, and they could give me tips. For instance, I learned not to use a sword as WAR from a PLer in the dunes, and I learned the importance of +acc from a PLer in the jungles... It's really a question of whether you are a eager, curious newbie or a dumb, ignorant noob, not a question of PLing.

EDIT
Oh yeah, the topic... There is already a mentor system on ffxi. I believe it's called the... er... MENTOR SYSTEM. A mentor linkshell would be redundant and largely vestigal. A very lose idea!

The fact that i no longer post in this thread means the idea was scrapped due to lack of participation and people who disliked the idea. The idea of mentors was around the Mentor System, that was the point, redundant or not.

And it wasn't "hey let's help people individually!" like the mentor system is, it was "Let's help people in a group because there is power in numbers.". It was to try and help newbies and experienced players alike for many different things. Again, the idea was scrapped, thank you for your input. ^^

O, I know the idea was scrapped, but I tried to make an LS simular to this a while ago, and it didn't work out too well. Basically, high level people want to spend their time in HNM LSs, and that can make them a bit busy at times. When they aren't in their HNM LSs, they probably have a social LS they like to hang out with. Also, most linkshells other then HNM linkshells will help the lower level people out.
So I dunno, it was a good idea ^.^;

Yeah, that's what social shells are for ^^ When I'm around I try my hardest to help people out, even if it means sitting in jeuno waiting for a shout about something.
