Hello everyone. Today I was watching my friend play FFXI. He is a level 16 warrior newbie, and is still getting to know the game. Something happened to his char. today that made me very angry.

I will tell you basically what happened, and if you want the specifics read the longer story. Basically, half the party died by a gob, he HPed, went back to camp, got agroed, HPed, repeat, repeat, then got agroed again, went **right past** the camp, got no help, tried to zone, died, got raised, zoned, and while he was resting, the leader said that she was going to replace him if he didn't hurry.
(Now the long and specific story)
He was lfg in valkurm, and walking steadily towards Konschtat, hoping to avoid agro, when he got a party invite. He accepted the invite, and saw there were only 3 people (including him). They were all in Konschtat so he headed to where they were. When he got there, they started heading the other way, and got 2 more party members. They fought a few mobs, but headed steadily towards the beach as they looked for members. They fought a goblin, and half the party died. My friend just HPed back to the konschat zone. He worked his way back to camp, but got agroed by 2 sets of sand bats. He tried to fight them but he died yet again. He HPed again, and went back. He died again by a goblin agro, but this time got a raise. He went towards the parties camp and got a gob agro again.
He walked past the camp, but no one bothers to voke it off him or cure him. The tell him to Zone. With 30 HP left. Of course he doesn't make it. He is resting in selbina when the leader says: (and I quote, I am not making this up)
"Hey, you need to come to camp soon or we will replace you with a LS blm. Sorry."

......
I can understand why the party leader would get angry, but maybe instead of saying "We will replace you if you don't come", say
"Hey! Are you having trouble getting to camp? I'll come help you! Follow me!"

I mean come on guys.. can't we be a bit more considerate??

I did not bother to put the names of the people who were involved, simply because I know those people are probably usually nice people, and I don't want to start a feud or anything... It just strikes me as odd, the way we treat our newbie players.

one question: how did your friend feel?

Well he was a bit frustrated but he didn't take it out on the party at all. After they said the would replace him, he said:
"Wait a minute, I have died 4 times for this party and now you are going to replace me?!"
And he disbanded.

I guess my point is we need to be more helpful to new people, and this is a prime example of higher level people's egos and impatience getting in the way of their helpfullness.

1st:prism powders and silent oils, cmon aerwyn, you should have told him that.

2nd: if you were watching, you could have guided him through valk w/o aggro it is very possible i did it all the time on level 1 ls makey runs.

3rd: the party leader was probably getting annoyed that your friend didnt have any of the items from point #1 as would I.

4th: what's teh rest of the pt gonna do for him, try to get to selb w/o aggro, then try to make it back w/o aggro when knowing full well that half the pts in valk cant make it 30 mins w/o a PL.

5th: your friend didnt die 4 times for that party, he died 4 time because he wanted xp, not the parties fault.

I'm not bashing you or your friend Aerwyn, i'm just playing devil's advocate seeing as how no one else really is.

I didnt know what Sneak Oils were at level 10! Chances are he doesnt either.

But I do agree. I dont think I've ever died that much trying to get to a party. People have died maybe once. That darn cave part with the bats can be very dangerous. But uh...its very hard to get that much aggro if you play it safe. You should have told him that gob's aggro to sight. DONT walk in front of them.

But even after all that bad luck, the leader shouldnt have said what he said. Why were they in such a hurry? People are in auto-haste these days. I would have disbanded too.

Well I know prism powders and silent oils, but when you barelly have enough gil for your equipment, it's a bit tough to spend 30k for a stack of powders or oils.
Also, I tried to guide him through it, but it's a bit difficult to guide someone into not getting agro; especially with sand bats because you can't really avoid agro in the cave.. 3rd, he was at the camp to begin with, but the leader said to come to Konschtat to kill things before they got to camp. 4th, the party did have a PL and therefore could have taken the goblin, or the PL could have taken it off of him.
And 5th, yes he died 4 times cuz he wanted exp but each time he didn't get any help from the party whatsoever. When he said "Ugh I died 4 times I can't get to camp" There was no mention of anyone helping him get to camp, actually there was nothing said at all. No "; ;" or "dam" or anything.

its not that i have any issue with what you are saying Aerwyn, what i am saying is that there is/can be a viable reason why the leader was in a tizzy. i like to understand both side of the situation before i just throw out a rant. and if he is your friend, couldnt you have logged in and sent him some oils and powders to help him out? as i said, i'm not trying to be an ******* here, just trying to get you and others to understand that there may be outside factors and possible way to avoid the circumstance re-occurring.

Yes I know; I have been in a position somewhat simular to the leader's position before. Everyone can get a little short with new players, especially when they take a long time to get to camp, or don't understand how to do their job.
I have been short with new people before, I know what it is like. I guess I was just trying to get the Bismarck community to look at how they treat new players, and maybe see how they can improve it.

So, the leader wanted to replace a member of his party with a friend of his. He has the right to do so.
Instead of just kicking a random person, he chose the one which seemed to be bringing the least to the party.

The question I have to ask about the lack of a voke on the gob your friend had on his tail... Did the party have a chance of beating it ? You already mentionned that half the party died fighting a gob. 6 deaths instead of 1 is very compationnate, but rather pointless.
After seeing him HP multiple times, they probably felt pretty annoyed and didn't feel like dying for him.

They probably could have been a bit more helpful. I don't know if they tried guiding him (by words or by other ways) back to the camp, etc... But we can't deny that most people just want to get out of Valkurm as fast as humanly possible; they tend to have much less tolerance there than elsewhere.

I, too, am wondering how he managed to get so many bats after him while you were watching him. Did you try to guide him ? Did he listen to what you were saying ?

After 2 years of nagging, my friend from work finally joined our FFXI world, and considering how inconsiderate and impatient others can be with newer players, I gave him the coaching of his life.

I was so overly protective of him, I guided him to the Dunes, I showed him the area, I gave him a little of my gil for oils and powders, made him make his HP in Selbina, and I sent him on his way. Ok, no, I escorted him to his party too, LOL, I was like a mother hen.

I was so worried that if he had a terrible experience even getting to the party (like the OP's friend did) that he'd be so turned off by the game and never play it anymore. But in all, he was quite competent, he does very well now and knows the unsaid rules. Some people are quite understand and some aren't, and I taught him to be overly prepared for those who aren't.

Hope your buddy is ok and not turned off.

Expections for true newbies and vets playing a new job are vastly different. Sounds like the party was treating him as a veteran and not a newbie. That's pretty odd considering a vet shouldn't ever come close to dying while traveling no matter what level he's on at present. I'd hope most folks would be kind to newbies who are trying their damndest to learn and be good party members.

FFXI needs more newbies. IMHO, when an online game stops getting new players, it starts to die. Be kind to the good ones -- you know who they are. They're the ones that are open to learning and who try hard to do stuff without begging for gil or PL or other high level handouts.
