Mentors and New PeopleFollow

Just a thought for those of you who have Mentor, but how often do you get to use it? Do you get genuine questions from people who need help, or do you get bugged more by n00bs with too much time on their hands?

I ask because I was thinking of doing something and putting my Mentor flag to use for a while.

Now, while a lot of incoming Xbox360 players are likely porting over from PS2, there will still be more than a few actual New people who will be looking to learn the ropes. It's a good time to show people how much we really know about the game and pass that knowledge on to these people.

One person, alone, can't provide this service, and this is where I'm asking my fellow Mentors for help. While i can be in any one of the three starter cities, I would prefer to base myself in San d'Oria to start with since that is my home country. If people are willing to base themselves in Bastok and Windurst for a few days to help the newbies, you'll not only be giving them a good head start in their knowledge of the game, but you'll also be putting forth a good impression - that there -are- people willing to advise and guide rather than ridicule them for their lack of knowledge.

I know the expansion is coming. I know everyone is eager to unlock the new areas and go exploring. But I'm in no hurry to wade through large crowds. I think back to the introduction of the adventuring fellow NPCs and the long lines at both of the needed sites to unlock it. The expansion isn't going anywhere if everyone fails to get access to it immediately upon activation, and frankly, I'd rather wait and see what other people uncover ahead of me.

But I digress. I feel that helping new players get a fair understanding of what they're about to deal with it every bit as important. We're going to be seeing most of these people for a long time to come. Let's give them a warm welcome!

Points that should probably be covered:

-Starter jobs and basic equipment
-Stacking items in inventory (so many new people miss this for 10 or so levels)
-Signet - what it is and does
-What to do with all those crystals!
-The AH, Vendor NPCs, selling items, obtaining gil
-Choosing a craft - If you feel inclined to cover this, then by all means. Someone's bound to ask anyway.

So, anyone care to join me on this endeavor?

Sounds good to me. I can help stake out Windy this weekend. I'm supposed to pt but meh, it can wait. I'll make sure and throw up my mentor flag when I log in saturday.

I've had that status for awhile and have only used it once! LoL

This is a good idea, I'll see how many friends of mine I can recruit to help.

If you want to discuss it more in game just give me a tell. I'll be back on Thursday night.

Well, these mistakes are more or less important, useful to know, yes. But these things get learned fast.

One thing that would help horribly the new players learn about the game:
DO NOT POWER-LEVEL! It only help perpetuate ignorance.

Please, do not PL PUP/COR/BLU as fast as possible and learn about the job. Give the opportunity for new players to learn normally about their job without having a high-lvl hold their hands all the time. Its quite sad to see parties above 30 having to rely on a PLer to keep it working.

Its horrible to see at what point PLing is abused in lower lvls. Useful to reduce downtime? yes. But not at the expense at doing the job everyone is supposed too.Scrapping the healer and the tank and just make a 6-man DD party is just lame.

I tend to agree with you, Dralid, but this isn't about PLing or educating the present playerbase against it, it's about helping the new players make wise decisions. :)

I HATE pling!!! I'll help anyone with whatever else I can help with but I refuse to PL.

This is one WHM you don't have to worry about doing that. =D

I'll PL a group who cannot party because there are no healers present.

I will not PL a group who over pulls, or has the jobs able to party effectivily.
