Is it just me or is there a shortage of lower to mid lvl tanks around? I was just lvling my blm (lvl 50) and I swear to god there was no one around! Has anyone put any serious thought into what jobs could be tanks other then nin and plds and actually be effective? If so I would love to hear some thoughts on it.

Bard. Though that's really at end-game when we have access to certain gear and songs. Not really at this point. Though if a Bard buffed up on specific gear they 'could' in theory tank in mid-low level parties, just not as effectively as in merits.

I'm talking about the lower lvls.. forget anything about 60 and above.. I'm not a big end game person.. I'm just looking for more balance. I mean it is GREAT that Squenix added more jobs, but why not a tanking class? If one can act as a tanking class.. seriously enlighten me.. I really want to know

I saw the same thing earlier this afternoon. Never thought I'd see the day where a brd would be looking for a party for more than 10 minutes, not to mention the other mage classes.

Actually...

If you get the right race, with the right gear, and the right sub, along at the right level.

A rdm/war could tank. I cant remember the guy, but he posts a lot in the rdm forums and gave a pretty good guide. It got kinda flamely toward the end, but I think its worth a shot. But you couldnt just pick any random new rdm to do it. They probably have to be geared for it and such.

Heya Sweetie,

***** Tank and get a MB pty^^ Exp flows 10 times faster then a regular party set up..lol

If you have freeze already then you should be good to go, since that is the most common used spell in most MB parties.

I'll probably get rated down for this, but my brother and I proved to do extremely well as dual WAR/NIN tanks, in part because we understood how we would react in certain situation, but with a few warm up battles I feel that dual WAR/NIN could give you steady xp.

Also I was XPing with my 47 THF the other day in QSD and actually had a WAR/MNK tank (yes, WAR/MNK) and he was awesome.

Nah, you wont. Since I believe war's were the tank before people decided they didnt want to heal the tank(nin)-joke, relax-

War/nin 2x have never been an issue in any of my parties. And sometimes we didnt even plan it that way, the tank leaves or dc, war/nins usually want to keepon going and do just fine.

War/mnk. I actually havent seen a war/mnk tank or do anything past the dunes.

What I think is interesting is that Squenix expessed at Samurais were originally meant to be a tanking class.. I have a sam, but I have never tried it... has anyone else?

lets see tanked as drg war mnk sam till 32 34-40 tanked as war mnk yes sam was orginally ment to be a tank class thus the af boost of tp gain from damage but they suck at dodging hits waaaaay back when the lvl cap was 50 war mnk could and would tank till then it was pretty much the only tank class they had nowadays wars are afraid to get hit and would rather dd duel weild with nin not that there is anything wrong with it just rare to see a war tank after 40 ish granted some of best xp i have had was in gustav (sp?) around lvl 56-58 with duel war nins they where a couple and had tanking to and art we had like no down time so look for a war/mnk whos actually knows how to tank or go for 2 war/nins or manaburn

I tanked with my Monk/war out of necessity until 55 when I got turned into a party favor by the crabs in kuftal tunnal. I was able to successfully keep the hate for the most part. when the tank dc's and you are the only semi-tank on the server, you have to try something different. Now, I am not sure all Monks can do this. I am a Galka with a load of hp and vit. I don't know if anyother race cept for Elvaan might have been able to pull this off. It was in the basement of garbage shiitatel if you were wondering.

Jaden my War is 53 now. If you need a tank send me a tell and I will take a beating for you darlin.

Being a Warrior myself I have to respond to this.

Most if not all of the "older" Warriors would definitely laugh at you if you ever said this to them. Old style Warriors are always willing to take as many hits as necessary to ensure the mages/party or whatever survive. Old style Warriors realise that War/Mnk is a very good tanking class. Couple problems with War/Mnk are that once you hit the 40s, you lack the hate tools to maintain hate (Provoke, Warcry and Boost don't always cut it). Because of this you have to use attack food(or sushi) to help maintain that hate through your attacks. In addition, once you get higher, mobs start hitting harder making us a bit of a MP drain requiring more down time and less XP/hour. Eveyone wants the best XP/hour to level as fast as possible thus the reason for avoiding War/Mnk later on.

Now for a lot of the newer Warriors comes the following problem. Too many people are so deadset on having War/Nin in parties that they are saying War/Nin only on invites as early as the jungles. War/Mnk with a GAxe is a really good tank especially using one our break weapon skills to lower evasion. Not to mention counterattack on mandies is awesome. Because many of the new warriors use nothing but War/Nin anymore, once shadows are down they can be afraid to take a hit because they have never tanked as War/Mnk.

I can't totally knock war/nin because 3 - 6 shadows is nice to have at the start of a fight, but other traits of /Mnk and using GAxe can offset those shadows.

Anytime I am in Khazam and see a War/Mnk I salute them or give them a cheer because they deserve it.

Other Notes:
For other new warriors, please do not use a sword or great sword. Please use a GAxe or Axe as these are our A weapons. Sword and greatswrod are B weapons for us meaning less attack and less accuracy.

For those DD warriors, what most new Warriors don't realise is that /nin doesn't become entirely useful till 48 when you can dual wield viking axes (+20 Acc) and then 50 when you finally get the delay decrease of dual wield II. Up to lvl 30 sub Mnk and from 30 to 48 you should be subbing Thief for Sneak Attack Sturmwind.

war/mnk gaxe you can tank till 50

I was old school too tanking till 48 with War/Mnk. My big problem is I didn't realise that boost provided hate.....to be able to go back and do it again with that knowledge.

I tanked before Sushi was available and used Fish kabobs. It is pretty much consensus on the warrior forums now that in order to tank at levels near 50 you have to deal damage so if you are missing, you may have to sushi it, if you are hitting and not taking much damage then attack food.

Bream sushi can be useful with its +5 VIT. There is the enmity one too that would be very useful as well.

The other thing with a War/Mnk tank is to definitely limit yourself to VT mobs. You will get better XP/hr that way, take less damage and usually hit more often.

last night in bibiki bay. Galka Monk, Hume WAR/NIN, Galka DRK, RDM,WHM,BLM. We went without a "real" tank and everyone had a great time with little down time and chain 5's all night long. we all just bounced the hate around. No deaths, everyone left with alot more xp then they arrived with.

edit: lvls 67-68

I was tanking in Qufim yesterday as war/mnk. The rest of pt was whm rdm rdm sam blm i believe. I didn't lose hate once, only time the rest of pt took dmg was during AoE from the worms. Kept boost and provoke rolling. Good times ^^
