Um, is this "illegal" or "legal?"
Where can I get it?
How do I work it?
And how reliable is it?
Oh and free is nice, always nice, I like free.

Not sure how you could classify fraps, I'd say it's safe to use. I'd try googling to find a download, the free version leaves a watermark or the FPS, I can't remember which, and the video only allows 10 second clips.

Free version only allows screens to be saved under the .BMP format, and leaves a watermark.
It also allows but a 30 seconds recording.

But it's the best screen/video taker I've found so far, so I highly recommand it ; you can get a full version by (*gasp*) downloading it from Emule or so.

But be aware that since it is a 3rd party software, you can get suspended/banned for using it in FFXI. Just don't mention you have it running.

Fraps is not a 3rd party tool in respect to FF XI, so you can not get in trouble with it. It's simply a screenshot/benchmark/movie recording tool and has no advantagious or detrimental effect to gameplay.

In fact, SE even supports using it. They has an AMV competition at the Fan Fair, remember?

I've heard of people being suspended/banned for using Fraps, but again, those may be just rumors.

But some people have been suspended/banned for using IME, which is (if I'm not mistaken) but an inoffensive input tool :s.

Again, as long as you never mention you're using a 3rd party software like that, no one will know you do.

Fraps is designed to run behind FFXI meaning that you dont need windower to use it. That is why the Fraps people tell you to load it before you start the game. They designed it to need absolutely no 3rd party programs to use. There is no way to detect your usage of Fraps what-so-ever on SE's part.

Edit: If you are going to seriously use it to make videos then I would suggest getting the full version. It's not too expensive and works very well.

Thankies!
I just went ahead and downloaded the free version from www.fraps.com
Work nicely but the 30 second video feed it kinda lame.
And LikeI think I said,
I like free, free is good.
