Well, I finally got my computer all set up on the Internet... only took a month and a half with getting my hard drive replaced (I know it was under warranty and it was free, but a month is just ridiculous), and another two weeks going through my school's painfully slow ResNet registration process, which includes an orientation seminar that I had to wait until after Thanksgiving Break to attend...

And now, I can't play the game because my update download for POL viewer keeps getting interrupted by Error POL-1161.

It states: "Network is busy or there are connection problems. Please try again later or verify that cables, networking devices, and network settings are properly configured."

I was able to download a few of the files, but after a few minutes it just keeps cutting me off... and altogether my 56K that I was running the game off of at home was downloading these updates about 20 times faster than my T3 ResNet connection is...

I am pretty sure my network connection is okay because I can surf the web fine and download software with no problem either; it is only with POL that I am having these problems, and I assume that my ISP is blocking the download because I am consuming "too much bandwidth" (which they are notorious for doing with various games).

Anyway, since my ResNet does not seem to allow me to play the game, I suppose I won't be playing anymore... and after I pissed away $30 on CoP that I never even got to install...

Well, it was really fun playing while I was able to. I may play again sometime when I live off campus and can get away from this crappy ISP. Until then I suppose I'll try to see if I can continue this update at various times... perhaps the network is just crowded now; who knows. Then again, it will most likely be several months before I am able to play again so it is probably for the best if I just say goodbye... it seems like this game is going to hell in a handbasket anyway and probably will dwindle down to a few loyal fans by then.

So goodbye everyone... since I haven't played in 3.5 months anyway I never really had a chance to meet most of you, but I can tell by this board that I probably would have enjoyed playing with you guys.

I bought a new copy of the game along with CoP that I never got to install, so the CD keys are still good. If anyone knows a person I can sell them to (I have both FFXI with RoZ and the CoP sets, both are opened but I never installed them so they are still good) for pretty cheap, let me know and I'll try to negotiate something.

Anyway, if I can't get this worked out soon, I don't think I'll play this game anymore. If this game doesn't work, I doubt any of the other MMOs will work either, so my career as an MMO player may be on quite a long hiatus.

Well I FINALLY got POL viewer installed... it only took ALL NIGHT...

I still have problems connecting and staying connected though, so I know for a fact I won't be able to play the game consistently, at least not during *any* hourse when other people will be using my campus LAN in relatively high volume. I was only able to stay connected to the server to finish downloading updates when I connected to it at 1:30 AM! And then it still took like 7 hours, just for POL patches! Damn uber-restrictive private college LAN... heaven forbid we try to use the Internet for anything... FUN.

I believe there was an isuue on Anti-virus software giving that error message and having to disable it for updates to be completed, not so sure 100%, but check on playonline.com for more details.

Well the problem is my ResNet.

I am required to use Sophos Antivirus provided by my school in order to use the Internet *at all*

In addition, the ResNet service queues all Internet acivity done during "peak hours," which is essentially 10 AM until 11 PM, and during this time POL is essentially inaccessible.

The queue is the reason why POL is running slower on my campus T-3 than it EVER ran on my 56K at home. Even though we have a T-3, the server basically only allows a few things to be done at a time, and applications like POL, for some reason, tend to time out before they can finish their job.

The reason why I was unable to download the POL updates before 1:00 in the morning was simply because the traffic on ResNet before then was simply too high and I was timing out.

Of course, the implications of this when (if) I can start playing again are probably that I'll time out on ResNet every time I try to play the game and get kicked off my server, which means that most likely I'll either have to play extremely late at night, or not at all. Right now the second option seems more attractive, at least for the next 6 months or so (as long as I am on campus, that is)... of course I WOULD like to play occasionally, but I am unsure if I am willing to pay $13 a month to play something rarely at best.

Well, I finally downloaded the POL updates, registered for POL, installed the game online (along with CoP), but now I can't connect to POL to access FFXI. I keep getting error 1363 which is *another* network connection error. Oh well, I guess my ResNet doesn't allow this game after all. Gamers must be pissed at this school, because games like CS, TFC, Q3, and any Blizzard games are blocked too.

ResNet has forced me into early, temporary, and unintended retirement. If the game is still alive and kicking 9 months from now, I might get back on. Doubt it though.

Think on the positive. . . Now you can concentrate on keeping your grades up, macking on the ladies and graduating college.
You are spared the addictiveness of this game and can concentrate on the real world! You are truly to lucky.

haha good point...

even though I am in grad school so GPA doesn't mean as much anymore, it is hard enough just to sustain a B average here (a B- average is required to stay off academic probation!).

That and my parents kinda expect me to be married by the time I get out of here, so...
