What a n00b I was as a newb.Follow

#1 Jan 11 2005 at 3:51 PM Rating: Decent
Heh, just looking back and thinking some of the things I thought back then, kinda makes me laugh. Besides the usual manual dodge defense in the very beginning... here's a couple more of my less educated posts from the beginning of my gaming experience.

Possibly Pwr Lvl Party Members???

suicidal gobby's are great

Please feel free to crack humerous jokes or post some of your n00b moments you may have had as a newb.

Actually when I was starting out the first thing I did was waste my money on every weapon that I could afford...Yup I was one of those warriors running around with a scythe or spear that drives the guys on War forums crazy...Of course that was before I got my hands on my first Greataxe...

lol. I actually did the manual dodge thing too when I first started, as a WAR. Actually had someone /cheer me and /clap me after one of those fights. I was proud of myself for my "good" dodging technique. I was using a scythe then too, I think.

Well I quit manual dodging, but I still believe that some placement has an affect on accuracy. I can't get that one out of my head. :-/

And I still do PLENTY of n00b things. :-b Here's a really sad one. I'm a 57MNK with a 45DRK and some other melee jobs and I JUST found out I've had STR and ATK reversed the WHOLE TIME! O.O

Ahhhh, I remember the days. ^^ When I first purchased FFXI, I had a rough time getting it installed. By the time I finally got it installed, I picked the first character that I saw. Anyway, this character turned out to be the ugliest Hume Male that SE released. In fact, my character is so ugly, he is not even an option in the menu anymore.

After a few days of leveling WAR with my ugly Hume Male, I made it to level 5. This is about the time I started to interact with other characters, and realized how ugly my guy was. I wanted to start over, but I was like “I’m already a level 5 warrior! There is no way I’m starting over now.” Man was I clueless. Long story short, I’m now the ugliest level 60 blm on our server.

Sorry to get sidetracked there. The real reason that I was replying to this thread was to post one of my n00b/newb moments. When I eventually got my ugly Hume Male WAR to level 7, it was time to upgrade my gear. Looking through the neck slot at the AH I noticed that I had enough money for a Justice Badge. I didn’t know what the hell it was, but I figured that Mind +3 was a good thing…”Yes! Now I’m going to be smarter!!!” Despite the fact the people examined me, and told me that a Justice badge was worthless for a level 7 WAR with no sub, I didn’t believe them. I thought that they were just jealous. Eventually I researched my job, and other jobs on the net, and realized how different stats affect different jobs. Boy did I feel stupid, :D

bah... justice badge is still a nice neck piece regardless of job. Not only is it one of the first available neck gears, but the +3 mnd could come in handy when you have 3 hp left and you're hoping that lizard's poison effect wears off... Also, I think the only other necklace really available at this level is the Wing Pendant which is a rare/ex item in sandy. Both are suitable for a low level melee... afterall, let's not forget the Justice Badge also raises def.

As for just starting the game... I almost quit before I even got started... here's why:

I purchased the game so I could play with my roommate and other friends. By the time I finally installed it and updated it, etc... my roommate and friend were hanging out. I got my character selected and they kinda left me on my own. For the first 45 minutes I tried and tried and tried to figure out how to get the NPC to take the stoopid adventurer's coupon. I had multiple cats singing a concert the whole time... was very nerve recking, frustrating and just bothersome. Finally, after long enough... I got frustrated and my friend showed me how to access my - menu. Wow did that make things easier.

My mind is drawing a complete blank. I know there is a long, long, list that could be made... Don't chime in either Leetfade. I'm sure you remember all the mistakes i made! :)

I was sorta lucky back then... I helped a friend level from 1-20 on his War before purchasing the game myself. So i knew enough about the game to get from A-B... but after that, i was lost. For me, this is the first true RPG game i've played... the concept was familiar, but really that was about it.

Thanks again to all my friends that kept all my n00b /tell's to themselves^^

LoL... I remember first time I grouped with my RL friends... I couldn't find them. They would keep saying: "We need your help!" and I'd keep saying: "Where are you?" I'd get "(Pos) @ the road". I'd get flipped around and end up following the road the wrong way, or getting lost somewhere... it took almost a week for me to get the following PT and navigating with map and compass down. Sad thing is I was military and a previous scout... I know how to use a compass and I'm an excellent navigator... lol, I guess Krem wasn't as gifted. Must be the Female aspect in her. lol, j/k feminists...

Dunno, call me noob if you want but i still believe that positioning yourself behind or kinda (not talking about SATA) the BEASTMEN will likely miss more than if you stay standing in front of them.

I'm talking when soloing and let's say getting Fire crystals from Orcs at Ghelsba, maybe it's just my imagination, but it's fun to keep running around of them and seeing their misses more often than just standing there

THANK YOU ALL!!!! I FEEL SOOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!!! LOL!

To all of those that are witness to my ongoing daily noob moments, I will let you know they started from the very beginning.

My son had already been playing the game on pc, so when I got mine installed on ps2, he helped me set up my character and navigate the menus. Then he set me loose in West Saru and told me to fight bumblebees. After dying twice, he looked over check on me and said "Mom, why are you hitting them with your fists? Didn't they give you a weapon?"

When I do manage an act of decent caliber, you can know my son is in the room....

j/k

My buddy did the same thing when he first started. Out there in his standard issue elf gear bare knuckling everything he could. LoL. He almost quite before level 3 because he kept dying. o.O I couldn't figure out for the life of me why a land worm was killing him, until I went out to help him. LoL. I felt so bad I went and bought him a full set of gear.

I remember my n00b days, well actually, still do, being that i'm King N00ben!! That's right i'm back! lol Anyways, I did some pretty stupid things when I first started. Took me an hour to figure out how to attack something. Yea i dont read manuals lol. I also tried to fight sheep at level 3. I figured "hey they are only sheep, i can take them". I didn't know how to check the monsters level untill AFTER i got creamed by the sheep. I was pretty depressed lmao.

Last but not least, I remember meeting Krem when i was level 9. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I saw Krem fight with another monk. I said hi, and they teamed up with me for a few hours. That was my first REAL group. lol I luv ya Krem, don't be a stranger!!! =)
