Fire crystals are getting ridiculous. They are 4k in most cities and I've seen them get up to 4.1 to 4.5 in windy. So, I grow my own now.

Most people use: brass pot + herb seed + water crystal on a watersday to get fire cyrstals. BUT you will also get bay leaves. While you get more fire crystals I don't have any use for bay leaves.

I use: vegetable seeds + brass pot and water crystal on watersday. I get either +/- stack of fire, 1 or 2 saru. cotton, 2-4 la thiene cabbage. I craft so I use the cotton and stacks of cotton sell nice. The cabbage can be used for the old man quest in selbina for fame in bastok, sandy and selbina.

I hope more and more people begin to grow because 4 to 4.5k for a stack of fire crystals really sucks.

Soon I'll have 40 plants so I will not be buying fire crystals anymore. ;p

What I'm having trouble with is finding the damn seeds. A lot of time they are out of stock in the AH. >.<

Take a low level job and kill saplings in S. Gusta.

Take a low level job, get signet and go crazy in Ghelsba... that's what I'm doing with my mule...

EDIT:
Thought I might add that I can farm more stacks of fire crystals in a shorter amount of time than babysitting gardening. Unless you're workin with multiple pots of 5 or more, I would farm fire crystals more than trying to grow. However, I don't think there'd be any harm in trying both either. ^^

Yeah good point. I was going to take my 4DRG out there soon. Dangruf Wadi is another good place for that too.

Eh, I like fighting orcs more than gobs... they just seem easier and more daft than gobbies. Gobbies kinda seem "organized" at times.

I guess this is how you percieve time. I log into my mule check my plants logout and play my main character. Takes maybe one minute. You have to go out and fight things to get fire crystal drops takes you alot more time. I have to wait a few days for my crop but my time invested is relatively minor. Again it's how you view your time.

I have 5 mules so it takes me a little longer but within a few days I have stacks of crystals. I do agree this method is only worth doing if you have a mule and at least 10 pots.

Uh oh... tunnel vision POV.

You're looking at time invested into it... I'm looking at gil per factor of time (IRL, not invested). It takes about 2 - 3 IRL days for a gardening project to be complete... in that 2 - 3 days, my lvl 8 can level to 10 or 12 and get 6-10 stacks of fire crystals. So I spent 3 days playing and getting exp as well as stacks of fire crystals. So not all is lost, I made progression in both gil and exp. Now after those 3 days of gardening, you got your main job up some and are solely relying on growing fire crystals. Let's say you have 10 pots... Unfortunately, not all will yield fire crystals... so out of the 10 pots, you might end up with 50-60 fire crystals, so we'll call it 5 stacks... 6 stacks to be generous.

Granted you got to level up your main job, but if I'm also muling and gardening with 10 pots, except I play my low level job while the plant grows... I get the 6-10 stacks from farming and the 5 or 6 from the gardening... Wasted time? Not really... made more money and got some exp by farming them... and I don't have to worry about getting bay leaves, la theine cabbage and/or blue peas from Orc's.

Now even if I didn't garden while my mule was out there... within the 2-3 days time, my mule farms in 30k whereas your gardening pulls in 20k. Granted 20k is nice for doing nothing but a few minutes of checking your plants a couple times each day IRL... and you can still have the freedom to continue leveling your main... but you might profit more from combining the two... 30k + 20k is 30k more than you had. This is even more recommended if you're in need of the gil to purchase gear/spells/food/equip to continue leveling your main job...

Personally, it comes down to the luck vs. drop factor. Orc's I know will drop low level armor drops, beastmen seals or fire crystals... however, brass pot + veggie seeds + water crystal can yield a wide variety of different things... from 2 thundermelons or rain lillies to blue peas to bay leaves to la theine cabbage to 9-20 fire crystals. Personally, I'm trying to get more into the tree cuttings and clippings... hopefully turn over some ores and start making a serious profit.

Side note, if I need the crystals for synthing, I find it quicker and easier to farm them than try and wait for them to grow... thus the reason I suggested the low level job/mule in the first place.

Personally I find farming crystals with low level characters tidious and boring. If you enjoy that then more power to you. I really don't have a problem with gil I just don't like paying more than 4k a stack for fire crystal. I can't really explain why I don't other than I don't. The point of this post was mainly to get people to play more of an active role in the market. If we refuse to pay higher prices than then prices must go down.

With the gardening recipe I gave there are only 3 possibilies - Fire crystals, cotton and lathiene cabbages. brass pot + vege. seeds + water crystals. If you use other pots and seeds then you can get other results that are not as good like bay leaves.

Can I see your source of information? Cause I know for a fact I've grown thundermelon's with brass pot + veggie + water... I am not entirely sure about the bay leaves tho... that may have been from grain or herb seeds. As for your intent on the post, I understand... and whether you choose to farm or grow, or both... it all ends up in gathering fire crystals thru alternative methods other than paying the gil on the AH for them.

do you have any water jugs or anything to help them grow?

or place the pots under the window for better sun?

or talk to them softly at night?

Actually 'the real reason' crystals have gone up so much is because I haven't been on lately, atleast in Bastok, I would assume. No honestly, when I go out and farm crystals and 'junk' for 6+ hours at a time in the areas around Bastok with my low level thief it is pretty easy to bring down the prices. I drop a few stacks of each at a time into the AH for way under AH price; i.e. since AH price of fire crystals are going for 4k+ I'd wait and drop atleas 4+ stacks in at once for around 2.1k and then /shout to market area to tell everyone to make sure they under bid the current prices on fire crystals.Usually after doing this several times you can bring crystal price down and keep it that way for a few days RL. However, you'll end up getting alot of /tells from crystal farmers cussing you out for undercutting their method of income. But occasionally you'll end up with a crafter or two thanking you for dropping the prices on crystals and once in a blue moon they will send you a lower lv crafted item(one such sent me a few brass flowerpots) or some extra gil for helping them out. ;)
