PC vs. PS2. How much better is it?Follow

Ok I'm thinking about switching to the PC version of FFXI from the PS2 version. Now let me explain why.

I just bought a widescreen HDTV and I just built a new PC. My problem is that the picture on the new tv is actually worse that that of my old tv when it's not a digital signal. My video card on my PC I built has DVI out so I could supply a digital signal to my TV that way. So I guess I'm trying to justify the cost of repurchasing the game. Are the graphics THAT much better? How much more akward are the controls? If anyone has some experience with both I would appreciate the input. Thanks.

In a word... yes.

I play in PS2 while my girlfriend plays on PC. The main difference is the resolution. A normal TV display is only 640x480. To my knowledge, PS2 doesn't support any HDTV functionality, so that's the only resolution it's capable of displaying. Or course the picture would look worse, it's the same resolution spread over a larger surface.

Now, PC can offer a much higher resolution. My girlfriend plays at 1024x768 (I think), and the difference is astounding. However, I would suggest having a SERIOUSLY powerful system to run FFXI at a high enough resolution to look good on your TV.

A high-end HDTV runs at a 1080i/720p resolution. We'll stick with interlaced for now, not sure if your computer or your TV supports progressive scan. That means 1080 vertical lines, for a PC resolution of 1440x1080.

Edit: Also, make sure you don't run the game in widescreen mode on your TV. That would just be ugly =p

As for the control differences, I can't comment. I have a USB keyboard for my PS2. I couldn't imagine playing this game with just a controller.

There shouldn't be any question here. FFXI on the PC looks great! The higher resolution really helps the game alot. The controls for the PC are good, and you could most likely use a gamepad of some sort if you want. Keep in mind that this is comming from a PC gamer, so I am a little biased against consoles. Anyway, last time I checked, FFXI was about $30. Give that a try and see if you like it. FFXI does require a bit of power under the hood, so hopefully your video card is anything less than a Radeon 8500 or a gForce 4, you may have to lower the graphics a bit.

Also, a tv resolution is somewhere in the area of 320 by 240, so jumping up to 1024x768 really does look alot better.

PS2 isn't as laggy when it comes to network (I never had slow downs unless I did Garrison), but switching macro sets and backgrounds temp. freezes the game, and a problem I've had with PS2 using a keyboard is that sometimes caps won't work when you hit it, and the keyboard can lag like thhhiiissssss

PC Totally... not only do you have more resolution options and what not... but you can exploit the Airship glitch on PC as well as replace your moogle with another model from the game if you wish (IE: Lion or Bahamut or Carbuncle or whatever).

Well i Have a pretty good computer. 9800xt overclocked and a 19in lcd screen. I seen pics from ps2 and i looks at mine and the difference is huge. With normal res ingame you have a blurr to everything. Now I regedited the screen rez on ff and im running 2048X2048 and everything is clear no blurr or anything. To answer question though yes it will make it look a hole lot better. My feeling is you havent really played the game untill you play it on pc. As far as the control there easy for me since alot of the pc games i play are keyboard controls anyway. Wish I could post pics of a ps2 rez compared to pc rez.

Both support Progressive (100% sure on the TV, 80% on the vid)

LGA 775 P4 2.8 w/ 800mHz FSB HT, Radeon 9600 DVI Out. 512mb (yes I know I need a gb. :-b) PC3200. Enough juice?

Doesn't everyone?? o.O If not I couldn't imagine typing. LoL. Wow that would suck. My keyboard went out one day. I lasted all of an hour before I had to go to Comp USA and buy another one. LoL.

Yeah but I hate those vertical bars on the side. LoL. They're grey. wtf? LoL

o.O I can't even type in Jeuno it lags so hard. I have to run into my MH to type to people and I'm on Brodband Road Runner. ><.

Well, thanks for your input everyone. Looks like I'll try it out and see how it goes.

^_^ I've got both the PC and the PS2 version, so I'm not really overly biased to either. They each have their strong points and weak points.

PS2 I find runs A LOT smoother then the PC version. Whenever I play the PC version, my character just bumps all over the place when she runs... and the scenery going by gives me motion sickness o.O
The PS2 runs smoothly, but it chokes BADLY when it hits major lag .... >.> the CN for example... R3000, game just locks... 1 minute later I'm staring at and entire battles worth of chatlog fly by, then "WHM, WTF?!?!"
I haven't had any major lag problems like that on the laptop tho.

I also like to play w/ the controller over the keyboard... BUT, I have a USB keyboard for the PS2. Sure, the macro's are a little harder to get use to with the L & R buttons, but I haven't had any problems yet. It just means I need to make sure that I know my macros really good.
I only have 1 set for WHM (20) with 2 full lines I can swap in and out during downtime.

As for Res, the PC > PS2... most definently. The PS2's graphics are blurry and ingame screen shots look like **** >.< But, remember. These PS2's are like, 3-4 year old hardware. New PC's with better graphics and crap are new, every year.
Also, on the PC you have a greater option of Configurations to mess with... ; ; I envy you people with your power to shut off weather effects! (I HATE KONSCHTAT HIGHLANDS DUST STORMS).

Controls.. >.> I don't know, I'm a controller kind of girl. I don't like using the keys to run around, drives me bonkers. I like the controller... the analog. ^_^; Need to invest in one for the PC version too.

Personally, its your choice of prefferance in the end. PC <> PS2, either way, its the same game, just with differences. I'll continue playing on my PS2 (when I have it... curse you parents!!) but the PS2 isn't gonna last forever. I occasionally get on my laptop and play, and use Fraps, and such.

^_~ In the end tho, I would recommend the PC version...

Leet if you know any friend on your area that plays FFXI on pc, ask him to borrow it and install it on your pc, your Ps2 registration key will work fine on the pc version after being installed.

Also key to the game is a Ps2 controller and an usb adapter, they run around $15-30 depending on brand and with a little work on the configuration, they are a breeze.

I started on ps2 but after friends telling me that pc was better, I switched and I haven't picked my ps2 after that, graphics and detail on pc are superb, plus the command windows are better spaced out, definitively worth the tranfer to pc.

I like to lay on my couch while looking for coffer keys and farming, and the resolution looks pretty good on my 32 flat screen.

go Ps2!!

This depends what you have... PS2's are fairly universal as the components used internally... so they will have similar performance. However, Jim's 700mHz PC from down the street won't be able to smoothly play FFXI like my 2 gig can. Heck, even if both parties have a 2 gig processor, a gig of ram and differ on video cards, performance may vary.

Given Example:
PC #1: 2800 Barton w/ 1gig ram and GeForce MMX 440 w/ 32 meg ram.

PC #2: 2800 Barton w/ 1gig ram and ATI 9800 w/ 256 meg ram.

Obviously in this example, pc #2 can play this game to full graphics and not experience much degregation in performance. However, PC #1 (my current specs) will run the game fairly smooth with exception for weather effects (currently disabled cause my video card can't handle them) and for rendering of lots of textures (usually trees in jugner or la theine). So PC #1 will still lag a little bit, but for the most part still play the game smooth. However, PC #2 would smoke PC #1 and PS2's capabilities.

So really, it comes down to what you have in the pc that determines if gameplay will be more enjoyable or just more frustrating.

Well, for graphics PC > PS2 always, assuming you have a halway decent PC.

I dont know about the controls, since Ive never played the PC version with a controller, but I for one have become very adept with my PS2 controller. When people tell me they use Ctrl+whatever for their macros, I cant imagine how tedious that would feel to me.

In the end though, it comes down to preference. And for me the biggest selling points were;

1- My 32 inch TV is much bigger than my crusty 17 inch monitor.
2- My sofa > my computer desk+chair.
3- I spend all day in front of a PC. The last thing I want to do when I come home is log on to ANOTHER PC.

I think the only thing I would prefer about the PC would be the ability to use a windower, and look up stuff while I play. Its annoying to have to rely on printouts, teh Brady guide ><, or get up and log on to the PC to research something.

I dunno if anyone fixed it or found a work-a-round... but SE addressed the windower in one of the updates several months ago which eliminated the use of a windower to play FFXI.

Funny how different people really can be... but then again that's what makes life worth living right? Personally, I've been behind the keyboard since I was 8 and was, for the most part, unseperable from it. I ended up pursuing an IT job and now am into the software development aspect of the industry. I use php and mySQL, manage domain names of dozens of different websites, as well as manage a development team abroad. All this is done thru pc... yet when I get home, I'm on my pc like butter on Toast. Heh, partially the reason my ex left me was she got envious of my pc... I would come home after a long day's work and head right for my pc. LoL... oh well.. I gave her advanced notice 3 yrs in advanced... she chose to disbelieve.

It sounds like you enjoy your job. Thats great. I dont. Maybe if I was in a position more like yours, I'd be more inclined to log into a PC at home. But when you do something all day that you loathe and find tedious, you want to distance yourself from it as much as possible.

So even if I'm not logging into a PC at home to do work, the fact that I sit here all day miserable has a lot to do with the amount of time I spend in front of a PC at home.

NOTE: Im quitting this horrid job in 2 months. My notice has been given.

On a side note, I can relate to the whole ex wife thing. Her loss.

Wow talk about off topic.

Heh, ermm... it's cozy and nice. I am not much of a morning person and usually am not very motivated to leave my house at all (nearly everyday). This results in me working less hours than I should nearly everyday of the week. Also, I spend a good majority of my time on these boards and other random, non-work related sites, as I'm trying to occupy the time spent while one of my programs executes or changes are implemented to the Database... enjoy? eh... I soak it up like a cat taking in sun rays... but it's very tough for me to get into the mind state required to do so.

Personally, I think the main reason I can go home and head straight for the PC is freedom. At work I'm limited to what I can do. Obviously gaming is out of the question as this is still supposed to be a workplace environment... and I doubt my work pc could run anything other than quake I and doom. However, when I get home I know there's a pc there that can do anything I want it to, go anywhere I want it to go, and there's not many restrictions as to what I can do. I'd probably have a really tough time at work still, except now I have a laptop so I bring one of my kids with me to and from work... makes things a little more comforting.

Hi, i'm a console gamer, i kinda hate PC games, though i'm not saying that all the PC games are bad, cuz that's not true, but i'm gonna talk about that.

What i want to say it's that i dislike to play a game with a keyboard and mouse, a lot of ppl says to me that i'm crazy for me prefering to play a FPS on a console instead of a PC but i'd rather play a game with a control and on a TV.

But here comes in FFXI. I live in the UK, and i wanted to play it so badly that i bought the NA version when it came out for PC, i wasn't sure if i would like it, but anyway i bought it, installed it, updated it and started playing it, 2 to 3 hours later i was playing very smoothly with my keyboard, and at that moment i didn't know about macros and such, now i just can't imagine playing it with a controller.

About graphics, you can always go into the register and change the display to 2048x2048, and it just looks awesome, though you need a very good graphic card and cooling system. There isn't a single PS2 game that looks better than FFXI in high resolution, let alone CoP.

Btw, after playing FFXI, i got Doom 3, later on HL2, and some other great FPS, but my thinking about PC games hasn't changed at all, i'd rather play those FPS or any others on an XBOX or any other console. I still hate the keyboard and mouse to play games.

So in conclusion FFXI is great to play with just a keyboard, the control design for it is excellent, and it definitly wouldn't work that well with a control pad. And the graphics are way better on the PC ver. i'd like to see it thru a HD monitor or TV, though that game is not designed for those kind of outputs, so the difference should not be that great.

Just my 2 cents.

I really like PC. My comp is a POS tho, 1.6 P4, 256 mem, and for kickers a PCI GF420! So it doesn't look amazing but i still love the game

This happens to be an ongoing discussion in my house.

My son plays on PC, and I play on PS2. We switch off occasionally just for kicks, but I have a hard time navigating on the keyboard just because I am used to the controller. I am old school enough I refuse to get rid of the controller, so there you are.

One point not made here yet--

My son has to spend his evening sitting upright in a chair. I get to kick back on the couch and be more comfortable :)

Windower works fine... I've had it all along.

I have PS2 and PC version as well. Lately my computer is p-ing me off, running slow for whatever reason. Its 2.88ghz P4, gig of ram, and (the part I think is slowing me down) nvidia geforce fx5200, 128mb. Upgrading to a Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb when I can, I hear it'll fix all my problems.

PS2 is good for fishing. Controller vibration = cool. I also use it for novelty; in SOME cases its easier to use macros with PS2; I prefer PC most of the time. PS2 is just cool to line up a macro and hit X when ready.

Well that seems to be one of the main complaints, however, I'm going to be on a 40" widescreen HDTV on my couch. :-b. So it looks like I'm buying the game again tomorrow ><. Everyone I know (IRL) has it on PS2. Can anyone host it. :-D

PS2 for the couch... If you can play PC on your couch then that will do better I am sure. Who wants to sit in front of a Desk all night after work. Of course there will be less lag on PC, but look at the price of the PS2 compared to a good PC which is over 3k.

I've been playing on PS2 because my computer is too old, and I never felt like getting a new one.

But I really want to play the game with better graphics, so now I'm buying a new PC (hopefully soon - if I can find a good deal on a new PC). (BTW, I'm kinda clueless when it comes to PCs, anyone want to recommend specs to look for? lol)

Maybe if I'm sitting upright in a chair, then I won't fall asleep as much >.>

The difference is night and day. I've been a hardcore console gamer since the inception of Atari :) and have been playing FFXI on the PS2 for nearly a year now with very few complaints.

I've been working in the IT industry for several years now and used to live by my moto "The moment I start using my computers for games is the moment I stop using them for work"....well that time has come, lol. My roommate purchased FFXI for his PC about 2 months after I started on the PS2 and right off the bat the details, and graphics were simply amazing.... this started the burning desire to switch to PC for me. Recent PC upgrades (not for FFXI) also fueled my decesion to move to PC from PS2.

New Graphics card w/DVI = GeForce FX5600 256MB AGP from Chiefvalue.com for $90
New Monitor = Dell UltraSharp 20.1 Flat Panel Wide Screen (Awesome price thanks to Slickdeals)
New Keyboard = Saitek PC Gamers Keyboard from Bestbuy
New Game Controller (For FFXI) = Gamers Factory USB Game Controller from Bestbuy

Well, just last week I finally made the switch (just installed his copy of FFXI, and CoP), and I couldn't be happier!

Pro's
  • Superior graphics
  • More Configuration Options
  • Music, Moogle and other various game experience enhancing hacks
  • Ability to record game play (3rd party software required, I use FRAPS)
  • Clarity and the ability to see further distances then my PS2 (Noticed this while camping NM's with my RM and he could see twice as far then I could when I was on PS2)
  • Supports Wide Screen aspect ratio's (Which BTW is phenomenal in 16x10, now I can see twice as much as my RM)

  • Con's
  • Occasional gitter/jumpiness
  • Having to remeber all my macros from PS2 and recreate them on PC

  • Please don't get my wrong here, I still love my PS2 version and being able to cop out on my couch and play lazy, but man is it schweeet on the PC, especially in Digital Wide Screen format. I can only imagine how it'll look on your HDTV (schwing!) When and if you do go the PC route, use the Wide Screen aspect ratio, and make sure your Video card supports "Fill" or "Aspect" ratio settings (Usually only available through DVI-D). DO NOT USE 1:1 or you'll get those ugly side bars. Hope this helps, and happy gaming, whether it's on PS2 or PC :)

I'm getting the PC version tonight or tomorrow. :-) I'll let you all know.

EDIT: Citrine, I built a pretty powerful PC for $800. :-b. A comparable, pre-built, PC would break 2k VERY easily. Let me know what you really want to get out of it and I'll be happy to help you. If your goal is FFXI, you need to concentrate on memory clock speed, and video card capabilities.
