Invites In Strange PlacesFollow

Just a quick question I thought I'd ask here as well as my thoughts on the situation. I know this kind of thing happens from time to time, but all of a sudden I've seen a lot of it happening to me and mentioned to me by people I've partied with. So here goes...

What's with the sudden rash of people inviting other players to parties at insane distances? For example, a few days ago I got three (yes, three) invites to party in Yuhtunga Jungle, almost back to back. Now ordinarily I'd be thrilled - I'm as eager to level as the next person and I like to help out when there's a need for someone with my job. But the thing is that at the time I was in, of all places, San d'Oria. In my Mog House. And showing off the game to my mother, who appreciates RPGs and is a very cool lady but doesn't need to be privy to my partying habits since she's seen the game all but twice at this point. Furthermore, I didn't have my party flag on and wasn't giving any indication that I might be interested in a party anywhere at that time. I guess I should have used /anon in hindsight, but guaranteed I've learned that lesson now! Admittedly, I was hardly expecting to be hit up for a party all the way in San d'Oria, much less three times over...

Anyway, my question isn't really why people are "rude" enough to do this or "stupid" enough to do this because I know it's a simple mistake for someone new to using the /sea command to forget to specify "region." I can also accept that there just weren't enough people in Yuhtunga at the time and I was really, really needed or something. I'm just curious as to whether Yuhtunga's really been that bad lately or whether I just got unlucky. I've heard a lot of stories from party members recently about similar things happening to them, so I thought maybe it was something special about Cerberus right now that needed clarification. Is it a dearth of players in Elshimo or just new players in need of further instruction on how to use the /sea command? Help me out, folks! I haven't had any personal trouble getting invites, but maybe I'm just lucky like that. All thoughts are welcome.

[Edit] Please read the entirety of the thread before you respond to what I've said. I've made a few replies to people in hope of clarifying my situation a little better and the responses I'm getting from this don't seem to be quite what I was expecting. Thanks! ^^

It's just getting started, trust me. You will, in all likelyhood, get approximately 1-2 invites per hour to party (as a PLD, that is) from your near-30s till mid 60s.
I cannot recount how many times I've been doing something with my LS or other friends and have gotten a PT invite to Quicksand Caves, Boyhada Tree, or Kuftal Tunnel. Not exactly the easiest places to get to from a given spot on the map (Unless you're a WHM, but that's cheating).

Good luck, and enjoy the popularity!

It's probably not that people are stupid and don't know how to use the /sea command. You're a tank and you're one of those jobs a party almost always needs. No tank = no party. So sometimes you have to look across the entire server to find someone you need, and if that requires sending a tell to someone with their flag down then so be it. When I want to xp and I need a tank, DD, or whatever, I will ask every person I can until I get what my party needs.

lol, get used to it... after the 'newbie' areas of valkurm dunes and qufim island, people will mainly have their homepoint set in jeuno so they can get an invite from wherever the may be, and just warp to jeuno, and get a tele if need be to wherever the PT they get needs them to be. Ah, the joys of the choices of transportation SE has given us ^^

In response to the stange places I have received and invite...

I was in an alliance doing garrison and was asked in tell to powerlevel someone. First off, I was obviously in a party, and the person that asked was in our way during garrison.. so they knew I was in the middle of something. And, aside from that they sent a /tell to every whm there.

Hows that for strange.

Jeuno?? Pssshhh... fa-get-about-it... if you are wise to the ways of the game, you have done outpost runs so you can Warp anywhere when needed from your home city. If you haven't done them, I highly suggest you get on them! Unless maybe you are from Lastock... being from Windy I have Warp access to damn near all areas (can Windy get the Dunes just once please???) and can rest leisurely with all my junk in mog safe and storage. Makes it a lot easier to change job and warp to where ever you are asked to party!!

Well thank you for being honest... but I really would appreciate some explanation for why you feel that way, Tartaros. As I tried to make clear in my original post, I'm not trying to say people are stupid or rude or anything. I just wanted to know if there was something in particular causing Yuhtunga Jungle to need people badly enough to cause this kind of thing to happen. It hasn't happened to me before now and I found it somewhat unusual. If I offended anyone I certainly didn't intend to. Please let me know if there's some way I could have done this in a kinder fashion and I'll try to keep it in mind, but my intent was never to be rude. In all honesty I wanted to know so that if I was needed for some special reason I could try to make myself available more frequently, not so I could yell at people. I hope you understand that.

The moment I logged on the other day as my 30 WHM, I got THREE INVITES within the FIRST TWO minutes of play for my level 50 RDM to join parties in Kuftal...

And I was in Yhoator... >.>

So, a lot of people knew I had a 50 RDM even though I was playing as WHM... >.> lol

{Hmmm.} Actually this is quite a good point. Admittedly I haven't taken the time to do these yet and I can see how they'd be useful when I can't/won't pay for a chocobo and I don't feel like harassing the local WHM population for a Teleport. I will keep this in mind for future use - thanks for the excellent advice. ^^ I really should have remembered this... I just got so used to doing things on my own two feet or my chocobo's that it never occurred to me. Thank you for the reminder!

The problem though isn't that I can't get around as much as it was the timing of things. I didn't have my seeking flag up and I was busy with things AFK as well as in game, so three invites coming at a time where I really wasn't free to go help people was a bit frustrating, particularly when others generally won't search beyond Jeuno for members unless the need is incredibly great. As I said, I'm aware I should have used /anon, but again this has never happened to me before and that's why I came to you all to see whether something was particularly unusual or whether I just need to start using /anon permanently when I don't wish to be asked for a party. Looks like the latter is probably the best idea. Thanks for your input everyone! I do intend to enjoy the popularity, though I guess with that I need to learn to make certain I don't get invites when I don't want them, too. It'll save me and the would-be parties time and trouble I'm sure.

At lv 29, the jungle is one of the few places you can level. You really can't level around Sandy there. So to party you must travel.
These people probably were looking for a tank and saw you. (When I seek, I look for all in possible areas) I am sure they would wait for you if you needed to travel. And if you didn't want a party just tell them no. I do not see how it is 'rude' or 'stupid' but...thats just me. To put it simple...well...party if you want to(they can wait if they ask you from there) and if you don't want to party, say no and /anon. lol I hate /anon...anyway hope I helped in some way.

To try to put this kindly, your problem is only going to get worse, if you really consider it a problem. As you go further up in level, as a PLD, you're going to get more and more unsolicited invites if you don't want to go /anon. Now, I know you already said that you know this, but it really is a way of life for a long time. Finally, around the lower-mid 50s I stopped needing to go /anon, because honestly just not as many parties are forming around that level. As you get up a little higher though, you're going to start finding that the world needs more tanks, and its going to beg you (yes, sometimes literally) to go and tank for them. Heck, I'm lvl 60 now and the other night somebody offered me money to join their party (which was cool :) i'm capped til genkai 3 tho so i turned it down.)
I personally don't go /anon anymore because I don't mind being asked to help people do things or being asked to raise (Heck, i've bugged enough people in my own day to consider it highly hypocritical of me not to at least be open, and usually i'm up for anything that doesn't involve Eldieme Necropolis, but thats because I personally have a terrible history with that place, for reasons that go beyond the game itself.) But I do get a lot of unsolicted invites, in lots of random places... you just kind of get used to it. Or you get used to going /anon. No other choice really, white mages have to do it at much lower levels than us, from about 9-10.
The advantage is while the dragoon you partied with in Vulkurm is begging for parties in the 40s-50s, and the parties are begging you to tank. (That wasn't an attack on dragoon, btw.. i love them and my biggest complaint about this game is that for a lot of things you're utterly dependent on others to do just about anything, followed by my complaint about preconcieved notions about a job, race, or job/race combination. One of the people by whom I was most impressed in a party was a BST in the dunes... who woulda thunk?).
At any rate, try to make the best of it, eh? Over time, its a good thing, and like other highly in demand jobs, like mages or rangers, it pays out a lot in our favor. You get a lot of good from it, so take the bad with a grain of salt, and you'll be happier overall! :)

OK, I'm only going to say this once more because I'm starting to see this thread get way out of hand and people are assuming things that I honestly never intended to say.

This IS NOT a thread about my thinking people are stupid or rude. I have said that now at least three times. Please read the responses I have made to this thread prior to this one! I don't think people are stupid or rude for this behavior!

This IS NOT a thread about my inability to travel. I know people will wait for me if necessary and I can get places when I'm interested in a party, though I do appreciate the prior suggestion that I complete the supply quests to make this easier.

This IS NOT a thread about "Poor me, I get so many invites and I just can't handle it!" I know I'm a tank and that people need my help. I really do. I understand it is only going to get worse. I've heard stories and had people tell me this and I am well prepared. I have more than one character and at one time got to experience an attempt at being "bought" into another party as a WHM, so I know how crazy things can get - I can only assume it will get worse, even if I hadn't heard things.

What this IS a thread about is the fact that, as I have said, I have never had this particular experience before and I just wanted to know if it was something special (for example, some holiday I was unaware of that was causing an unusual absence of players for a short amount of time) and I needed to try to take more time out of my life to be available for people that would clearly need me in the future until said absence was no longer present. At the time I was UNABLE to help people because again, as I have said, I wasn't ready for a party and I wasn't going to be for the time I was logged in. And that's what I told them - I didn't get mad or say anything nasty, I just turned them down as politely as I could and went on with my business after turning /anon on so that I didn't continue to be hit with party invites that I couldn't accept at the time.

It is not a "problem" to be invited, I never intended to start that argument. I'm not sorry I play a popular job, though I don't play it solely to BE popular - I like tanking, period. I hope any of you that may know me in game are aware of that. I honestly wasn't trying to be mean or complain, though I see that others have kind of used this thread to do their own complaining due to the subject line of the post. I don't agree with that and that is why I have not replied to those posts - they were not my intended focus, though people are welcome to post the things that they want to.

The only thing I wanted was to know whether this was just an odd circumstance or whether it was just the beginning of my being invited all the time. Up until now I have had to put my party flag up and wait just like everyone else, I wish I could make that clear. I have never EVER been invited outside of Yuhtunga/Yhoator for a party in those areas until the day that prompted this thread. I understand now that it is just the beginning and that's all I need to know. Really. So please, please, don't read into this that I hate invites or people or whatever, okay? I don't. I had my fellow players' interest in mind when I wrote this. I just was surprised by being invited at a distance because that hadn't happened to me before and I took it as a sign of something being wrong with the normal flow of things that people couldn't find closer tanks to party with than me. Rest assured that if I hadn't been showing the game off to my mother and thus unable to concentrate on a party with my full attention, I would have agreed to go with the understanding that people would need to be patient until I arrived. Whatever frustration I felt was at the fact that again, I'd never even gotten ONE invite from a distance, let alone three back to back. I don't like disappointing people when I'm needed.

Can we try to agree on this? I don't want to start flame wars or anything, I just see a lot of people suddenly telling me "Well that's just how it is, you shouldn't complain." And I don't want that to be the main reply to this post because I wasn't complaining, honestly. I was looking for information. Complaining threads serve no purpose to me and I wouldn't start one without a lot more provocation than this... If I'm actually angry about anything it would be that when I do not have my party flag up then I'm probably not seeking a party, so invites are not something I'm interested in. And I'm honestly not angry, I swear. *desperately would like this to be understood* If I were seeking parties and then getting mad about being asked, the problem would definitely be mine. The "problem" was that I was having to let down a large number of people and so I came here to find out whether a special situation had come up where I needed to find time where I WAS available a little more frequently.

I hope nobody else mistakes this thread for this topic... please give me the benefit of the doubt here if you don't know me. I honestly did not mean to come off as just another whiny jerk that can't handle anything he or she isn't prepared for. I'm no more fond of that behavior than you all seem to be. My heart was in the right place even if somehow what I said was mistaken.

As a brd I get some invites out of the blue, from weird places and at weird times.

The one thing I do find rude and/or stupid is when people send me tells asking me if I want to party when I am in a party already. That blue font in the search screen should tell you I am already in a party so I cannot join yours.

Now if I have a search comment that I am looking to do a specific mission or event and you are forming a party for that mission/event, I could understand asking if I was interested even though I was in a party, but for an xp Party it's just rude.

I don't think what you experienced is strange at all. Once you hit 30 (or get close to it) the way partying works is vastly different.

Up until 30 everyone goes to where people party and puts their flag up and waits for an invite. After 30 you start doing whatever you want with your flag up or sometimes without and wait for an invite. Sometimes invites take hours to get. Sometimes you might be on all day without getting one.

So eventually someone decides to make their own party. They look at what has the invite flag up and then start looking for what they can't find. When it takes hours to get an invite waiting 20-30 mins or more for someone to travel to party is not such a big deal.

Now as to why you're just now experiencing this. I'd guess three factors are involved. First you're approaching the level where all this changes. Second lots of people are having jobs above 30 and are just use to this being the way things work. Third I think there are significantly fewer players populating the lower levels. At first the Japanese had the North American population at a signifcantly lower level. Then we had the Europeans. Right now everyone with the game has probably had time to start getting past the "show up and party" levels.

I don't think any of these people made a mistake and didn't realize where you're at. And really I don't think this is a bad thing at all.

If I don't want to be bothered I'll either set /anon or use a search comment saying that I'm busy and not interested in parties. I don't usually set /anon at all. I find that most of my good parties come from when I wasn't really seeking. Saves me a lot of time standing around looking for a party.

Heyas, me again... just wanted you to know that I really did understand that thats all you meant... only intended encouragement, really, as you seemed a little down, about it even if it was just that you were sorry to have to disappoint a bunch of people. Also just meant to say that its not really all that unusual to have people invite you from out of the blue. Personally, I just usually shrug and think of all the times I've been lfg, and theres just enough to form a party except.... there's no: tank, whm/smn, rdm/brd... and everybody sits around and waits. They're just hoping that maybe you'll be interested... feeling the waters, so to speak. Honestly, you didn't sound whiny to me at all... you sounded like somebody who was suprised by something I've learned to take for granted :)

Hehe, no worries AnaxagorasZ. I think I just kind of lost my temper a little after so many replies assuming I WAS just trying to whine about being overpopular. I really am nice once you get to know me and I don't want to get word out that I'm not after one misunderstood post. ^^ In forums like this sometimes people's reputations can be dragged through the mud for simple misunderstandings... I didn't want that to happen here.

While I don't know everything about the game yet obviously and I'm willing to admit that, I do have a pretty good idea of how things work. I guess I just put too much stock on the assumption that "When I have my party flag up then I'm available. When I don't, clearly I'm doing something elsewhere and not ready for a party." Heaven knows I know what a pain it can be when there are no healers around, so I can only imagine it feels the same when there's no tank present. It's just that I try myself to only have my party flag up when I'm actually ready to party, which means not a single SECOND before I've set my home point as needed and gotten everything from my Mog House that I'll need. I don't like to make people wait for me either, so that's usually the way I prevent that situation from coming up. Thus when I'm ready, I guarantee that upon receiving an invite I am ready to move immediately. By the same token, when I do NOT have my flag up, there's something I'm as yet unready for, either because I had no intention of partying or because I'm simply not prepared yet. I guess /anon is key to pointing out the difference between "I'm not interested" and "I'm not ready." I learned that with the WHM character I mentioned before, I really should know that. ^^ Being a tank I guess it's easy to forget exactly how important my job is, seeing as I've never had to hunt for one... I just never thought I'd get quite that amount of noise.

Anyway, thanks for coming back at least, I appreciate it. No hard feelings at all, and thank you for the advice/pep talk. ^^ I was pretty upset, but now that I see ways to make sure these kinds of things don't happen as often from this point on, I think I can get used to the new way of doing things.

well, I know from when I've needed a replacement for a party I've asked some peeps to come a pretty long ways but there are certain things to look for that I always keep in mind.

A: Is the person in a party or a party ldr? Obviously I'm not gonna ask someone if they're already partying unless it's a good friend of mine or LS member.

B: If the person IS in a party are they in an area where you exp pt? There are a few spots where you might see a party of peeps on search higher lvl than anything availible to exp off of. They're possibly working on a mission or quest etc. These people are last resort and first and foremost Ask them if they'd like to come exp after they're done doing whatever it is they're doing.

C: Rank. Can't explain enough how this helps in serches. It can sometimes tell you if the person has altep, vahzl, or yhoat tele-crystals, after Rank 5 the person can be airborn from any major city. And the higher the Rank the more exp the person has.

Those are the 3 things I always keep in mind when sending out weird invites to people otherwise occupied, always asking first in a tell, lvl range and class all should go without saying.

Being invited from a long distance isn't too bad so long as the people asking can take no for an answer, or if you do say yes... don't start pestering you about what is taking so long for you to get there.

My secondary Character (yes I am insane and am lvling two seperate characters) is a Taru WHM lvl 21, Rank 2.

I started out in Bastok and hopped a Bird to go to Windy. I get to Konshtat and get an invite to go to Qufim. I figure what the heck it was on the way if you go by bird so I said I'd come. I took the most direct route and got asked 3 times on the way there "how far are you"

Then... same day...I make it to Windy and I was in West Sarutabaruta and got an invite to go back to Qufim to lvl. I told him I was working on flagging rank 3 mission. The begging commenced -_-

"Where is your homepoint?"
"We are willing to wait"
"Pllleeeeaaasseee"
