Casual players at "end game"Follow

Just looking for some feedback from other 70+ players with extemely limited time frame to play this game. Professionals (dr, lawyer, engineer), single parents, and others who have some 60+ hour work weeks that have toughed it out making it to the mythical "end game"...

Up till the 60s the game was more or less play at your own pace... lvl or farm or quest as needed. Af was a bit tricky but Igot it eventually. I happened to take 15-16 months to raise a mnk to lvl 70 lol... But also took the time for getting good gear and helping friends of course.

But lately the game has taken a totally different role. HNM politics and a commitment that rivals that of a part time job. Almost everything beyond 65 is rare/ex (at leat for mnk) and requires a lot of planning and big alliances.

The 'end game" crowd is made up of some truly dedicated players that I admire a lot, but I'm curious what kind of time management tips people have when they have to juggle HNM shell events and a looming lawsuit.... lol.

Case in point, if work causes me to give up christmas hollidays and family for the sake of a job (and lawsuit threat lol) or to waste your birthday in a motel on a town thats not even on a map (cue the violin sob story music lol), we are of course going to miss some in game commitments too.

So how do you guys do it? The high level shells have a high level of participation required (ie I was advised to treat it as a part time job) and add that to a 60 hour work week plus travel. Plus HNM windows have to fall in a very limited play time (saturday afternoon lol). Do you give up and just go to 75 with AF? Or do you hel your LS once a week and then hope to leech some help? lol

I know Diem was in med school and made a valiant effort getting into the 50s before he had to bail.. I'm sure there are others trying to juggle both the game and a professional career. (I used to know a few other engineers but they faded away too). Just curious if any are in the 70s and if they had any tips on how to get by.

(PS. the xp reduction will help those of us that are stretched pretty thin, but I never had a problem on putting the time in on xp or farming. I simply expected to progress slower then my friends and hoped to catch up one day. This helps, but we didnt really need this new xp "handicap ramp" for leveling ^^ I'll put it to good use, but dont want to be seen as any less of a player for it)

<edit: spelling. Proof in the "myth" that engineers cant spell>

I feel your pain Thornn... and the only thing I seem to be able to come up with is either quitting the game or just getting on occasionally when you can. You can't help when the pop windows are or that they are controlled by people who mainly dont work lol. And alliances are never quick and easy soooo... kinda screwed if you have RL huh?

Thats pretty much it Fowler... Kind of depressing lol.

There is a 3rd but much less honorable method. I've seen people hire alliances for help on stuff like Ose and the assault jerkin (paid over 2 mil), and I have already come to terms with the fact that I'll need to pay 1 mil each for the black belt items. Problem is to get anywhere with this on other rare/ex I would have to resort to buying gil and thats just not my style.

And I'm not giving up on my friends either lol. I've got lots of offers for help, but from 2-3 people at a time from 2-3 different LS. This game is severely lacking an in game scheduling tool to co-ordinate a gathering like that outside of a large LS. Trying to gather 18 people through /tells is like herding cats...

I would kill for an in game friend list that had a little event calendar that would give pop ups like the way a /lsmes does.

i also feel your pain. most of the end game items i need as rng require the alliances of high lvl players to get, and are mostly rare/ex.
im kinda the exact opposite of your situation though. i play almost every day, for several hours a day, but im not a member of any good HNM/sky/dynamis LS, and dont have alot of high lvl friends, so im basicaly stuck with nothing to do. i sit in jueno, xp a little cause im bored, try and form an alliance to get me an Obow or something else i need, then just log off cause im bored and dont feel like xp-ing.

sadly, the closer i get to end game the more disappointing it seems. im nearing lv70 but i almot feel like im just plaing the game to waste time now, and not actually getting anywhere or accomplishing anything like i used to.

oh, and hi fowler. your on mky friend list from something or other, i forget why. lol

The people who are that commited to HNM and 'end game' events are most likely not a lawyer or a doctor...lol Thats just un-realisitc. Most of these guys who are camping for hours and spamming provoke has that kind of time.
To be honest.. if I had to choose between A) Have my masters in law or B) Obtain a ridll from Fafnir. I would choose A.

Lol the career didnt matter... Doctor or lawyer of course stand out, but anyone in engineering, architecture, project management... single parents... lol. Anyone whos job follows them home basically. Surely we arnt that rare post 60?

(and FYI for those who asked what the lawsuit was about in game, it was simply a contractual dispute. Nothing cool or exciting. Just got lawyered up a bit ^^)

As a person who elects to stay out of end game... I have a real life job, and the reason I play FFXI is because of the friends I have. So I considered myself kind of a high level casual player nowadays.

To me "end game" resembles too much a job -- something I really do not like. I just want to relax and sit back and do whatever I feel like doing at that day ;p

/em raises hand.

I'm a high lvl casual player.

took me two years to get it.

I work a high profile job, have 2 kids, coach a baseball team, ride motocross, wakeboard everyday after work, camp on the weekends,

I have a great LS, we are not the hardcore HNMLS like some. but we do alot of end game stuff. I get on for 2-3 hours most everynight late. where I would be watching the Television before bed. I play FFXI. I'll admit that getting the lvl i have was a *****. For the first year I played too much alot. Quit a few times because of it too. But now I just get on in the evenings
or when im just chillin inside. If the LS plans on doing sky I usually try to make that, if not but for a few hours. We dont do some of the ground god HNM's because basically you have to have nothing going on IRL and have some kind of bot/hack to even get the pull.

If i get mad at the game I just wont play it for a week or so.

So thats my high lvl casual gamer story. I do more stuff than most of the people I know and they dont even play FFXI lol.

Sorry, I am not a high level casual player, so I cannot give you any advice there, but I would like to offer an alternative.

I too am a casual player because of my job (engineer) and my personal life (marriage is less than 2 months around the corner). I hit about level 35ish with a Whm taru named Nall. At that time, I was working my 40+ hours a week, hitting the gym after work every day, making sure food was on the table for the female in my life (To this day I can't believe I chose someone that doesn't know how to cook.), spending time with my fiancee, and going to bed early (9:30-10:00) so I can be rested for work the next day. The weekends are usually half full with spending time with friends and making sure my fiancee doesn't spend all the money "I", I mean "we" worked so hard for, lol. All of the required time (a block of 3+ hours straight) to party was buring me out, I just up an quit.

Then about 2 months ago, I came back because I missed the friends. I started up a mithra named Nall. I decided to do something with this character that was different from the last. I was going to level every job up to 37 (sub-job level, I had to pick some stopping point) before going into the "mid-range" levels. That way, I still have fun in the game. I don't have a craving for end-game content b/c I know that it will run my life again. So, I just told myself to goof off at the lower levels with all job and have fun that way first.

Granted this approach is not for everyone, but it is something to think about. A lot of people get fed up with the players in the dunes, but I like to help them with advise. If all else fails and I still have a craving for the game after all jobs are 37, most quests are done that can be done by me, most missions are complete for my level, and other odds and end content is finished, I will level bst higher. With bst, you are your own boss. That is of course, I actually like bst when I get it unlocked.

Ah well, my 2 gil and something to think about ^^.

I think the most important thing is to play the game for fun and meet new people -- this can happen in Valkrum Dunes or in Sky. The underline -- the fun and the people make FFXI a good game, the game content is tailored to make social interaction to be a need.

A lot of people forget what the real meaning behind in the game. The designers make the game largely unsoloable, and create the idea of a LS for a reason. It creates an atmosphere of interaction -- and that is the reason why FFXI has been so successful -- it successfully create a gaming environment that binds people together.

A lot of people who just want to level fast and forget the social aspect of the game are the one who pays usually in the long term -- they get bored, they cannot get help etc.

LOL, I logged 161+ days play time leveling to 70WHM/35BLM so that i could be a casual player when i do get a job. Might sound a bit hipocritical, but at 70WHM there isnt much i cant do at the spur of the moment, if i choose. The only trick I think it takes is having a VERY large friend list. Now if only my rolodex was as big as my /flist.;; Also I find that its not hard to finance yourself over time if your constantly doing something, anything, something always drops even if its just while skilling up. Besides helping is its own reward. {death} {fun} {excitement} <3 NE for being accepting and not demanding.

Lol.... well I got a lot of support in game from people who read this, but sadly the only advice people are giving me is:

"I hate to say it, but maybe you'de be better off with WoW"

Or

"Start over as a beastmaster and solo the game"

I have heard a lot of people suggest WoW. Is WoW simply a cakewalk? Or is it really more of a "play at your own pace" kind of game, where you can put in 2-3 hours an evening an actually get results, without having to depend on a group of six or 18 people?

I dont like the idea of simply going to an easier game... I am not afraid of hard work. I would much rather stick to FFXI and tough it out. But the challenge 70+ isnt work ethic.. its reliably getting 18+ people with free time to accomplish anything.

As for beastmaster, at first I didnt like the sounds of it. Jojojo was helping me farm my eyes for O-hat and he's a great Bst rolemodel. He really demonstrated the job well as he solo'd a lot of nasty eye clusters that would have burnt my mnk to a crisp. I still want to take my mnk to 75 (and preferably get there and not be wearing AF still) but BST does look like a good fallback now.

yes!

WOW is cakewalk, I hit lvl 60 in about 50 days and Once i was lvl 60 i simply had no reason to play it anymore, and also once your a warrior, your a warrior thats it, no changing jobs or sub Jobs, your stuck with that one job the whole way ><

WoW is "easier" yes. I will agree w/ that. There are no subjobs either. However those that play hardcore at such an early stage in the game will say its too easy and theres nothing to do. DUH DUMBASS!! Lets hit lvl cap 2 months after a game is released >.>

Blizzard will introduce more end game material. Here's my take on WoW as I just started playing....

I really like the game, and yes you can put 2-3 hrs in and get results. Even the higher lvls where you need 6 figures in exp, you can still bust out some quests/instances in a couple of hrs. I have a lot of guys at work that play WoW. They really enjoy it.

Right now I'm still focused on FFXI because i've put A LOT of time into this game. I feel for my 1.5-2yrs of playtime I should get at least 1 character to cap, also I still have a lot of things I would like to accomplish (aka Excalibur).

I've been in 2 hnmls in my time in FF. The first one I quit because they wanted me to level, but they also wanted me in sky 5-6 days a week, and I could only get on when they were doing sky. Lost 12k xp the first time the ls tried Kirin, and was unwilling to do it again. After wasting my time doing that (and yes, even though I got 1 sky item, it was a total waste of time), I joined another hnmls. This one wanted me to level too, but they did sky and ground hnms quite a bit less than my first. Plus, many of my friends were in there. Then some friends quit, or started leaving. The linkshell went from being pretty cool to ******** people over fairly badly. One of my best friends in the game got screwed out of a Dynamis drop. I got sick of it.

Unfortunatly, if you're 75 and not doing hnmls, it seems that either you help lots of other people, do enms, or spend time getting merit points and extra equipment. I play for friends and, now that I'm high enough for anything, helping with anything that my friends ask me to help. I'm going to level some mage jobs too. I've thought about quitting... been really really close many times. If you like the game and the people, stay, if not, leave.^^ It's all up to you.

BTW, I work 40 hours a week, I'm working out 6 days a week, I teach martial arts 20+ hours a week, I'm in the process of opening my own martial arts school, and I hang out with real life friends. About the only thing I could add to this would be a girlfriend (alas, I have none :P [ok, I just wanted an excuse to use the word alas :P]), and I still play. I find it to be fun, and the people I have met in this game are some of the best people I've ever met.

I have thought about quiting many times -- quoting now retired Marzipants:

"To get more sunshine"

One day when I get my woman than I will quit FFXI ;p but sometimes hard to get hooked up when you play this darn game so much. Haha.
