Coming from a banking background and following stock markets and such. A great way, but it requires effort is to really track the AH. Get a spreadsheet set up, follow the prices on major items and over time you'll get a nice little bell curve. Buy Low, sell high... thats the key :)

Another easy trends on the AH, but this one requires good starting capital is that. 99% of the time you can't go wrong with buying items that are rare and then waiting and placing them on the AH a month or two later.. ie. hedgehog bombs, etc.

You can also do some arbitrage, set up mules in the cities, buy items from one AH thats' cheaper and sell on another AH that's more expensive.

I don't mind sharing this information, because its really common sense and most people know it, but it really requires some dicipline :)

People don't like Redthorn because he is quoted as this

"Omg, I have 80mil in equip and you still out damage me."

That, and I personally think using a kraken club in a rng party is stupid.

I used to have strong feelings against gil buyers/sellers, b/c of how much time it took me to earn gil. After a year of farming, crafting, fighting HNM's, camping NM's, and doing BCNM runs I'm burnt out. I just had my 2nd child and I decided it was a great time to stop playing FFXI. Mainly b/c there would be no way I would have time to earn gil, and still have fun in game. Now that time is such an issue, I understand how some people resort to buying gil. I have checked some of the gil buying sites out and I see how a lot of noobs are able to get scorpion harnesses and Haubys LOL. I also figured out that when someone says a friend left them a 7mil gil item, it usually means they have been gil shopping.

Earning gil is the solo game that people say doesn't exist in FFXI lol.

Lots of good advice.

Gil/Hour is very important if we are talking about efficiency. Sure you can farm beehive chips all day and make good gil but that gets stale. Mix it up, if you're having fun, time passes much faster. Maybe you won't be making as much gil/hr but I look at earning gil like earning xp, you have to chip away at it.

Yes I will agree with certain posters that money making is annoying and time consuming. And I agree that this is a game design "flaw" in someways. In some ways, I am tempted to play WoW (which the game easier and less time consuming) for that reason, but my work kind of limit me to few choices of hobbies.

I do still stress skill/behavior > gear. If you have to spend real money to make your precieved "skill" better, then you are cheating yourself. And I do believe there are better way to spend real money than making them into virtual currency and messes up other players who make money in the way that game is designed. A lot of those FlyingLS threads may disappear, if people do not buy less gil. And I prefer seeing less homeless people or having a new car over a virtual item.

You can be great and respected without the best gear in the game. Haha I got to see how our favorite Elathia in action as White Mage recently, and he is really good (better than me XD) without having leet stuff like Vermillion Cloak or a Serkit Ring or other stuff. I myself logged over 200 days (/blush), and never have a Noble Tunic. Like in RL, it is what one does that earns respect.
