latent effectsFollow

While skimming through the AH tonight in Jeuno, I came across an interesting piece of equipment called the "Sorcerer's Ring". Being a BLM, it of course caught my eye immediately. It's effect is +10 Magic Atk. Bonus... but it's latent. Could someone please shed some light as to what exactly "latent" entales? Someone told me that it only takes effect when your HP is in the yellow, but then someone else said that that is not always the case. 700k is a lot of gil, and I already wasted money on a "Wrestler's Aspis" (+2 INT latent).

LOL I just see that +10 Magic Attack and become mesmerized.

Also, is the difference between N.Q. Staves and H.Q. Staves really that much different to warrant the 1500k price jump between the two?

If you go to the equipment section on hear, find the item, then scroll down towards the first post of it, there is someone name Crayola (I think) that has listed most of the latents. All of the level 30 earrings are triggered by sub jobs (to my knowledge).

Latent means "dormant" or "hidden" and to activate, differents conditions are to be met, depending on the item. Because some of the first items with latent effects were triggered by yellow HP, too many people assume that it is the case with all items, but they are wrong.

As Leetfade pointed out, the level 30 earrings ( or mantles as well ) are activated by your subjob ( example : The Mercenary's Earring's latent effect (+2 VIT) activates if you subjob is WAR, making it a prime choice earring for Paladins. ) . All the rune weapons ( Rune Blade , Rune Axe, Rune Arrow, etc. ) activate their latent effects ( varies according to the weapon ) by draining 4 MP from you every 3 seconds when you are engaging a mob. Other objects have a totally unique trigger, like Save the Queen, whose latent effect ( +20 Accuracy ) only activates when Cover is used, and for the duration of the ability, or like the Primate Staff and the Kinkobo, whose latent effect activates when you eat a bunch of Pamamas.

As for your other question : Most HQ items aren't worth the price difference between the NQ and the HQ versions, however if for whatever reason you happen to have the money to spend on it, having the extra edge can't hurt you in the long run. So with that in mind, invest at your discretion.

If I'm not mistaken these also require a mage type subjob. This would make sense as you have no mp w/o a mage job or at least +MP gear.

Well without a mage subjob, it just means that the latent effect would never get triggered, really.

Basically, have MP if you plan on using those weapons.

I'm just not sure though. Think of DRK. That job has MP but is not a mage. Would it still work or would you actually need a mage sub? I'll have to test it some time.

I've read it requires a mage sub job but a lot of people just say so and aren't positive.

Oh and I'm not trying to attack your info. I was just trying to verify my information more or less. These weapons are more valuable if you don't need mage sub. ^^

Ack.. I just read more info on it and you just have to have MP. The mage sub is not required but you'd need some MP+ gear to activate the latent while in combat. :-b. Thanks for the help clearing that up Eva.
