Great gear is meaningless if you cannot have fun, and forget where FFXI is truely the best. The community aspect of the game exceeds the value of any gear in the game, and give you the best longlasting fun of the game.
Sorry I really feel like ranting about myself.
Sometimes......... I really do not know where I am in the game. I have seen so many people passed me, so many people opt to be less "leet" than me and people who strife to the best player in the game, and a lot of good people left the game. Some found fun, and some do not.
What truely is dispicable are the people who ruins the community of the game for their own gain. People who cheat, take advantage of others, to get the best item in the game.
I try my best to abide the written and unwritten rules of the game. I have gear I want in the game, but I try not to play politics of others or to support cheating to get there. And a lot of times, I put myself in disadvantage and miss oppurtuntines for my own good. But who cares? I had fun in the past, and I am still having fun most of the time. If reward does come one day (I do get rewards and sometimes quite good rewards), the sweetness of the reward is more than the anyone else can understand.
A lot of good people I know that left (or had left but returned) the game is the people who decide to stand and try the waters of the inner working of game politics to advance in the game, and find themselves they are incompatible with it but unable to back out easily. Only way to fix that is to quit.

Art for the sake of art itself is an idle sentence.
Art for the sake of truth, for the sake of what is
beautiful and good — that is the creed I seek.
