It doesn't need to be "FAILURE!". If it's not significantly greater than the projected theater take then the "Oh HO! Obviously this was all a scam to make EVERYONE watch it! They couldn't fool ME though!" schtick doesn't really hold up. I have no real stake in it though. Probably because I wasn't gloating about how I saw right through their money-making falsehoods
I suppose now we can argue how Sony actually though this was an
amazing way to make tons of money but just mistakenly but sincerely thought that faking a hack and threats, canceling the movie, then announcing a very limited opening, then leaving it for people to rent online was the best way to profit off the picture.

$50mil was a four week estimate. Box Office Mojo has it at $90 mil in November (before all this) based on the takes from "This is the End" and "Pineapple Express" -- $90m being in the middle. I assume that was for its entire run though.
