Culture clash I suppose. In your culture it was made standard practice and you were desensitised to it.

In mine, it's rare and usually only done for religious reasons.

Anybody know the origin of the religious practice of it? I wonder if it was originally based on medical reasoning, and then just became tradition. I can't take the time from work to look it up right now, though.

Anyway, comparing it to genital mutilation is silly.

Myself: I don't remember it being done, its got a few medical/cleanliness benefits (marginal or not), the fiance prefers its aesthetic, and so do I. I see no controversy here.

As far as the Jewish faith goes, it was done to signify one's covenant with Yahweh. Abraham was supposedly the first circumcised man.

In other traditions it's to do with cleanliness. It has to do with the build up of smegma underneath the ********, so the ******** came to be seen as being "unclean". Basically they were too lazy to wash under it.

I'd assume Muslims would do it out of Abrahamic tradition as well, not out of laziness.

In the New Testament, Paul spoke out against it since he wanted to throw all the trappings of Judaism from Pauline Christianity. It remained largely out of fashion in the Christian world until the late 19th, early 20th century when it came back in vogue as a cleanliness thing and (among some) as a supposed ************ deterrent. My own teenage experiences would suggest it's not very effective as the latter.

If you play with it for a little bit, it pretty much unwraps itself.

Penises/Peni/Penes are ugly, wrapped or unwrapped.

There's nothing awesome about waking up at four in the morning and fighting it to keep from pissing on the walls and ceiling.
