SO I'm quitting my job of two years for a position in the government. My office is a cluster-****, the staff is backstabbing and ******* and maybe only three of us come through every meeting. My start date is March 8, and I wasn't planning on giving notice until after my vacation time got approved, but when I went in yesterday my boss told me to leave early both that day and today, complimented me on my work, told me that I didn't get enough recognition and that I did an excellent job. Now this boss has really been not only fair and understanding through illness and deaths in my family, but she is hands down one of the best people I've had the privilege to know, and I don't think 2 weeks is fair to her, so I'm gonna walk in today and let her know I'm outta here. I won't tell the Exec. Dir. until next week, and at that time I'll write a letter, blah, blah...

So what I'm wondering is: Those of you boss-types---Is this a Friday AM move, or a right-before-I-walk-out move?

Welcome to the "work for, or have worked for at some point, Government" club!

I'm no manager, but my thoughts are that since you are leaving, and they either have to give you your vacation time or pay you equivilent, There really wouldn't be any harm telling the nice boss person. Heck, you might get a good reccomendation letter out of it.

And if they are ******** about it, just call in sick for 2 weeks and take your vacation money anyways...

2 weeks - ***** I have to work out 3 months dammit.

But yeah I'd tell your good boss person, you'll know you did it right and stuff the asshats. Apart from anything else you never know when paths may cross again.

Trust me it happens, this world is too goddam small sometimes :)

And Kao's right they must have to give or pay you your holidays.

And grats and goodluck in the new one.

If you are good friends with your boss, she should understand and would appreciate the gesture of you letting her know you are leaving.

When I have left positions I have always been honest to my bosses about why and when I am leaving. This was appreciated as it gave them time to plan for a replacement and to give you time to off-load any knowledge about your work to a colleague who is remaining. As a manager you know people will leave at some stage, it is the way of the world.

In fact I lie, there was a time I left a job with only a weeks notice and told none of the managers of the project I was on (the rest of the firm know lol). I had been lied to and abused by the managers. I quit the job, the managers were 'moved on'. I was re-hired on 3 times my previous salary and put in an assistant managers position with my own staff under a new project manager. Revenge can be sweet Smiley: laugh

Well, just got back from letting her know and she was, as always, fabulous. She even let me know that she's looking elsewhere, and that come October (I have a temporary appointment) if I need a new gig, she would love to bring me along. Yay.

As Kao said ... Welcome to the world of Gov'ment employee. Thank goodness from being on the OOT board you have a thick skin ... you'll need it .. not from the job but from your Friends **wink wink** who will invariably start the taunts of ... I worked so hard today .. oh you wouldn't understand .. you a Gov'ment employee .. how was your 8 hour nap today? or web surfing fest, etc.

Congratulations on new job and I'm glad you are leaving your boss on such great terms! You know that you have a great reference in the future and that always comes in handy!

Wait a minizzle! If you work for da gubbment and you want to quit, don't you have to give two lifetime's notice before leaving? I thought that's what bureaucracy was all about...
