When the boys were little, I used to sing this song to them.
A couple of years back, Dracoid & I had fallen out and not met for about 6 months. We cautiously met up at the pub (safe, neutral ground), sank a few cold ones, and came back to sample a bottle of scotch together.
As the alcohol and nostalgia combined, I played the song for him again and we both had a 'moment'.

I love singing St Judys Comet to my boys when they're falling asleep. Sorry for the vid it's the only one that had the song.

Pete Seeger, while blacklisted for being a pinkocommie, performed a lot for children. He put out at least two albums of songs specifically to be sung to or sung by kids. Take a look at the Pete Seeger Singalong Sanders Theatre and Folk Songs for Young People Album. Depending upon your age, you may recognize the songs from your own youth.

Talking to a friend who said the first time he heard of Pete Seeger was when he had left his radio on and came home to it playing a station in Chicago. I told him it's was The Midnight Special, which I had a few reel to reel tapes of shows, that my dad made of back in the early 70's. Seems it was my parents favorite radio program way back when I was little. That the show is still around makes me want to get XM.

My mom sang me Bob Dylan. "Blowin' in the Wind" was a particular favorite. I love that song to this day.
My brother Mike sang to his kids while they were growing up. He tended to use Harry Chapin songs. Tom Chapin his brother has many childrens songs.
Along with Pete Seegar, you may find the Woody Guthrie songs/record/cd for children. Lots of other good performers are out there.

My dad used to sing this to me when I was little. I used to get a kick out of it, now the song just annoys the hell out of me.

I used to sing all kinds of songs to my kids, but if I wanted them to go to sleep, I'd hum "Silent Night". It always worked.
I sing Grateful Dead songs to my sons. Those or made up songs.

I'm kinda weird in that I don't actually know many kids songs, because I never really had any sang to me. So my selection is kinda limited to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider." Beyond that, I tend to sing a lot of show tunes.
In elementary school, though, we had a semester where our normal music teacher was out on maternity leave, and the substitute had a real love for folk music. So now when I'm flailing around my mind to dredge up something I haven't sung a bazillion times, I often land on "Big Blue Frog" by Peter, Paul and Mary.
