IN case no one has any idea wtf this means, it's this:

Moldova students raid parliament
Quote:
Demonstrators in Moldova have attacked the country's parliament in protest at the victory of the governing Communist Party in Sunday's general election.

Witnesses say crowds poured into the building, smashing windows and setting light to furniture.

Police said a woman died from carbon monoxide poisoning after inhaling fumes in a blaze, state television reported.

President Vladimir Voronin urged an end to "destabilisation", but opposition leaders have backed the protests.

They say the election result was fraudulent.

Maybe it's a function of my age, but I do not see the point of Twitter. "I am eating breakfast." "I am sitting on my couch." Or "I am going shopping." Who actually takes the time to discover the banality of the mundane of what others are doing? You could do the same by just following your cat around the house and muttering to yourself about its' activities.

Perhaps if you were thirteen and in love for the first time you could have a passable explanation for wanting each and every detail of another person's life, but the concept of rational adults obsessing over inanities and mindless details of others smacks of a pathetic form of voyuerism-- or pathetic narcissism on the part of the Twitterer taking the time to announce his or her intentions to "make soup."

Please don't tell me any of you participate in this stupidity?

For once, I agree with Totem. I can see a use for Twitter, I suppose - as a kind of straight-to-the-point bulletin for a group of friends - but that's not how people generally seem to use it. It just seems so mind numbingly boring.

There are days that I use Twitter and then days I just ignore it completely. It does come in useful during conventions to let friends know what or where you are.

That is when the Convention Hotel doesn't have sucky cell phone coverage that Balticon Does. I'm not about to carry around a laptop just to twitter friends.

Ok, Elne, that is a legitimate use. I can see how that would be helpful. But largely, particularly in respect to teens' use...

Unless I'm missing some detail, I still don't see it. Is anyone suggesting that it's easier to send a single line tweet to someone from one computer to another than to send them a single line text message to their cell phone? See. Folks tend to carry around phones. Not so much computers. And if you're using your cell phone to browse the web to use twitter, there's a new level of hell being set aside for you...

Because it's not person to person, it's person to groups. It's a network.

I agree it's silly, but it does allow information to be distributed really easily amongst a large number of people.

That you still see a distinction here because of the device names indicates that, yes, you are missing some detail.

Baelnic is correct.

If I just want to message one person I'll text a message to them directly. If I want to get intouch with the podcasters at the convention, twitter is faster then using the radios, that staff are given, Less annoying too.

I don't have Internet access on my phone. To send a tweet, I use twitter's #.

Plus over the year I have had a twitter account I sometime find authors (Neil Gainman and John Scalzi, are just 2 of the writers I follow) cats (Ghlaghghee, see John Scalzi's blog Whatever) and even a lost sock (Mozart the Lost Sock) to follow. As for news, it wonderful if you want to learn what is happening faster then it's getting reported by the news channels. During the Mumbai Attacks, I found a couple eye witnesses who were updating from their homes withing viewing distance to the Hotels.

Most major news organizations now use twitter as well as reporters and even cameraman that does a lot of work for NBC, I know from Balticon. sometimes I'm lucky to see a tweet from him about a shoot he is going to. Reminds me of being in a AOL chatroom for Neverwinter Nights, the evening of the Atlanta Bombing and a reporter for NBC told us he just got a call that work was sending over a taxi, so he could fly down.

Todays tweets from Moldova shows one of it's best uses, bring folk together wither it's to try out the latest Ale at the local brewery or protest an election.

Has nothing to do with the devices. The detail I was missing was that she was sending information to a group of people. She just said "Friends", which I interpreted more on the lines of "Gee. I want to meet with so and so for lunch", not "I want to send a simultaneous text message to a group of people who's numbers I don't know".

The idea of essentially sending a text message to a service, which will then turn around and send a text message to another cell phone just seemed silly to me. I'll admit that if you're sending a text to a group of people, it might make more sense, but is only *really* makes sense if you don't know the people well enough to have their cell phone numbers, but just have their twitter names.

Twitter is used by twits it would seem. Not that that joke hasn't been made since the thing came out, but come on, the whole social networking thing is just getting out of hand. I'm with Totem.

Twitter isn't just another social networking site though. It's a really quick information dissemination service. Governments, from the federal down to municipal level are using the service, school districts, news agencies, health care agencies etc. Anyone who needs to get a message to lots of people simultaneously can now do it easily.

Hell, I don't even know what a Twitter is. I keep hearing about it on the news ("judge declares mistrial with jury twittering") but this thread is the most explanation I've gotten.

I'm not sure. I've never been to it's website. But I gather that it is just like the Facebook "What are you doing" portion of the profile.

At its core, twitter is a message collection and redistribution service. It abstracts source/destination points into twitter names and uses those to send out short messages. I tend to bash it because I tend to avoid the "new shiny thing" syndrome like the plague, but from a technical standpoint, it's not a bad idea at all. By abstracting the target, You don't need to post on a web page, or send to an email account, or text to a phone to send a message to someone. You just send to their twitter name, and their account handles where that message goes.

I just think that people get overly attracted to stuff like this. It's not really rocket science, but it is a reasonably clever idea. Well. Until someone makes a competing product, and the whole thing falls apart. Abstraction methodologies like that only work if everyone uses the same one. Once multiple services appear, you'll have the same sort of "I'm on Facebook, but you're on MySpace" problem. Then someone will come up with an abstraction for the abstraction and the process will repeat.

Kinda amusing to watch really...

Twitter is not like Facebook's "what are you doing". Facebook added the ability to send text messages to your profile, to be more like Twitter. I don't send text messages from my phone to Facebook. Only reason I use most social networking only because my 3 daughters and a few good friends do.

Twitter I use mainly to stay in touch with Balticon members, the NYT, Washington Post, BBC, CNN and other new services. It's great to stay updated on World and National News.
