This young woman reporter is originally arrested for having a bottle of alcohol in January. Along the way the charges were escalated to espionage. I can't help think this is a test for the new administration.

Having alcohol there is quite serious. Which is why there is so much bootlegging in that area. Hell, I know a guy that went blind from bootlegged booze in Egypt while he was student teaching.

I hardly think they are detaining a "foreign" reporter. The article said she holds an Iranian passport, residency, and national identity card. You've got to obey the laws of the land when you visit a place, much less live there for 6 years.

This sort of thing has gone on since... well, since. She might be a spy, she might not. It doesn't even matter. She'll be used as a bargaining chip. Usually this type of thing is followed up by an Iranian citizen, usually a staff member at a US Embassy or UN offices, suddenly is found to be spying in the US and is promptly arrested. Iran will howl in protest, prisoners will be exchanged and that will probably be the end of it.

The article also says that she was born in New Jersey, and got into the finals for the Miss America beauty pageant. I think she qualifies as "American". Just because Tehran doesn't recognise dual-nationality doesn't give them the license to detain American reporters on espionage charges because they went to a photo op with Khatami.

Being arrested for having or using alcohol - yes,a non-story.
Today began a closed-door trial for espionage. Reportedly she charged with passing classified information to the US CIA. The penalty for Espionage is death. If nothing else, it has the potential of adding a thorn to, already bristly, US-Iran relations.

Yeah. IIRC, the Brit in question was arrested for being a jerk to a cop (which, amazingly, will tend to get you arrested pretty much anywhere). The whole crossing the street illegally bit was just what started the confrontation. Nobby loves to give his own "presentation" of the story though, in typical Nobbyesque manner...
As to the Journalist being held. This story has been going on for quite some time. The surprise is that they've escalated the charges, although I think most people knew it was coming. As was pointed out earlier, you don't arrest and hold people for something that minor. They were clearly working up to something bigger. It'll be interesting to see how our State Department deals with this one.
Oh. And let's not leave out the possibility that she was actually spying for us. Not that this in anyway changes how our government should respond, but our righteous indignation at such absurdly false charges should come with a subtle internal nod and wink I suspect...

Anyone who goes there should know better than to have the kind of contraband that can get you arrested.

Yes. And if that's all it was about, she'd have been fined and released a day or two later, perhaps with a little tut-tuting or something.
After the first week, and she still hadn't been released, I don't think too many people were surprised that they were cooking up something much bigger to charge her with. This didn't just happen. It's been going on for over a month. They don't hold people for possession of alcohol for a month...

As I said. Irrelevant. As soon as she was being held for a longer period than the initial charge justified, it was obvious that there was something else going on. Whether she actually had alcohol on her or not is somewhat moot.
