Details of Desmond Hatchett's remarkable family emerged when he was taken to court by the authorities in Knoxville, Tennessee, for failing to keep up with maintenance payments.

He had four children in a single year – twice.

Mr Hatchett, who works in a minimum wage job, said that he was not trying to break a record and has no plans to have any more children.

He insists that he knows all of their names, ages and birthdays.

"I'm done. I'll say I'm done," he told WVLT local television.

"I didn't intend to have this many. It just happened."

Knox County Juvenile Child Support Court heard that the law prevents the state authorities taking more than half of his salary.

Although the mothers would normally receive between $25 (£15.60) and $309 (£194) a month depending on how many children they have, some of them will take away only $1.98 (£1.24) when the money available is divided up.

Hatchett's attorney Keith Pope said: "The children can't be supported all by Desmond, so the state of Tennessee has had to step in."

One of the mothers said that she struggled to feed her young son.

"He's a heavy milk drinker and milk is not cheap," she said.

He should be castrated and she should have her tubes tied. Had this been done after the first couple of children the state wouldn't be paying for the other 6. Who incidentally are going to have f*cked up lives and probably end up in prison.

Not sure about forced sterilization (too eugenics for me) but this is why we need to encourage more voluntary reversible male sterilization. They've invented a way to have a vasectomy that can be reversed easily and safely. Basically, it's a plastic plug in the vas deferans that prevents the sperm from getting out. The plug, however, is made of a special plastic that disintegrates at a certain frequency that only the man and his doctor know, and when he is ready to have kids, he can have the plug dissolved. Tada, instant fertility again.

Smart men will opt to have this done at 18 and they never have to ever worry about becoming baby daddies before they want it.

There's no female equivalent to the procedure yet, alas. The closest we can get is Essure which is nonreversible (since it forms scar tissue.) Mirena, IUDs, and the pill it us for us
