TORONTO (Reuters) – Beer maker Molson is turning of the tap and cutting off the supply of free suds to its retirees, the Toronto Star reported on Tuesday.

Molson, a division of Molson Coors, said it was looking to "standardize" its complimentary beer policy.

There are 2,400 Molson retirees in Canada and their free beer costs the company about C$1 million ($900,000) a year, the Star said.

Molson retirees in the province of Newfoundland will see their monthly allotment of beer fall from six dozen a month to zero over the next five years.

Current workers will see their allotment drop from 72 dozen bottles a year to 52 dozen.

"There was no consultation, we just received a letter that this is a done deal, which is totally unfair," Bill Bavis, who retired six years ago after 32 years at Molson's in St. John's, Newfoundland, told the Star. "I think with the economic downturn they're trying to take advantage of us, as a way to cut retirees' benefits and justify it."

Unions have launched grievances in Montreal and Vancouver, where the allotment is less.

A spokesman for Molson said the company feels it still has a very generous benefits package.

You have to wonder how they are going to keep the working man down if he isn't drunk.

Seems like they're getting way too much free beer now as it is. 72 DOZEN a year for current workers and 36 dozen for retired. Either way, they're getting well over 1 a day.

At least they're not losing any real retirement benefits.

1) Post needs a source link. (Yes, I'm lazy and proud of it.)

2) Isn't 6 dozen a month also 72 dozen a year? Did they word it differently to create empathy for the plight of the local drunks?

3) Shouldn't it be the other way around with the current workers getting the smaller allotment of beer and the retirees getting the full amount? Where is the incentive to keep working for the company that long?

What the **** do you need a source for a fluff story? The article lists it's sources as the Toronto Star reported on Tuesday isn't that enough?

I think internet forum protocol dictates that you put the link in if you only quote a headline or a piece of a story. If you quote the whole thing, a link is not necessary.

No need for a link, it's the whole article. Unless you want Yahoo's ads you aren't getting anything there that you wouldn't get here.

At first I thought the OP was Canadian. I was surprised to see him being so rude and ignorant. Then I read this:

Pretty simple. Iamadam is insulting Americans; he would be surprised if a Canadian was being stupid and ignorant, but not if an American was, because Americans ******* suck. Or so he thinks.

If the lack of a 'link' in a post that quotes an entire noncontroversial news story about beer now earns someone the adjectives of ignorant and rude then the flamage scale has changed pretty significantly.

What do we now call Katie?

I think you're overreacting to my post. I was simply playing on the stereotypes of Canadians and Americans.
