...the woman who was abducted from her homw when 11 years old, has been found.

Her kidnapper kept her and another girl in a shed in the backyard of a suburban Tahoe home, fathered two children with her, and leaves us with:

Quote:
From jail, Phillip Garrido told Sacramento's KCRA-TV to wait until the full story comes out. Adding, "You are going to be completely impressed."

One Seriously serious Sicko.

STORY

If you're curious what's hiding in your neighbor's tree-camoflaged back yard - it's probably just dope plants.

When her mom said she got the news and called her ex and said, "They found Jaycee. She's alive!" and they both burst into tears, I admit I welled up in sympathy. God, what an ordeal.

I can't imagine how screwed up that woman is, not mention her kids. Such a horribly sad story.

Heard the step-father being interviewed on the radio this morning, I believe he was a suspect for some time, must of been very difficult, although being held captive for 18 years and raped exceeds that.

How does one start a new life after something like this? How did she not off herself before now? My god I can't imagine... At least with the Shawn Hornbeck story, the kid was somewhat allowed to live a normal life. Being trapped in a shed? I can't imagine...

Probably once you have kids, even through rape, you would do anything to stay alive and protect them. Im assuming here, but they were probably her lifeline.

And yeah, no one can really imagine that type of horror. Im happy she has been found safe, but she is going to be one fucked up person for the rest of her life. Smiley: frown

Probably, but maybe not. People are incredibly resilient.

She's got a lot of lost time to make up, though. ****. She may as well have been in suspended animation all that time, as much as the world has changed and as little exposure as she's had.

It's hard to tell but if she got some really solid parenting during her earliest years, she's definitely has some foundation that you can't underestimate.

I'm not condoning anything here, but she lived in a "crude compound" which I assume is effectively trailer worthy. She was only found because the man (if you can call him that) brought her and her children with him to the police station to deal with a separate issue.

So she was not "trapped in a shed". She was probably given a good deal of freedom actually, but would have been so brainwashed by the time that freedom came that she wouldn't dare run, or even want to. She was probably outside playing with her kids like any other mother most days. I don't think she, or her children, will be AS scarred as people are suggesting, there'll definitely be issues, but we're not talking total loss.

I agree; all the new details coming out seem to support this. She was brainwashed, but her children were allowed to go around town (and apparently to birthday parties), and the woman herself helped out with the printing service Garrido ran, and interacted directly with customers.

Presumably for some time she was locked in that shed, until such a time as she became compliant. Also, despite her future "freedoms" she was denied the freedom to live her childhood out, normally, amongst her family and people that cared for her. You cannot quantify what this douche has taken away from this young lady and to imply that she was somehow not as much of a victim is pretty sad.

I wasn't inferring that she is not a victim at all. Victim is a yes/no kind of word, it doesn't have degrees. She's definitely a victim and I can't begin to imagine the ordeal she's been through, but "trapped in a shed" (for 18 years) is not the case here. The reality of the situation, based on the information available, is not as severe as that.

What I am suggesting is that being trapped in a shed for 18 years would leave your psychological state nearly unsalvageable. In this situation with therapy she may have a chance at a decent life (what's left of it) because she will have had an amount of positive stimulus in her life (playing with her children, working at the printing house, seeing the sun, birthday parties for her kids etc). The lady that was trapped in a dungeon in Austria (?) with her children for most of her life didn't have those things, for example.

I would almost equivocate this to old style arranged marriages as far as her quality of life. Horrible, yes, but it could have been much, much worse.

What gets me is the guy is a known drug abuser and rapist, and the police/parole officers never thought to check the compound he'd built in his back yard during their visits?

Didn't the neighbours ever notice something odd going on? They are only a few metres away from each other.

The woman next door wondered about it, but her husband discouraged her snooping. It's a pretty clear example of the gaping divide between "minding your own business" and intervention these days. We can't all be the next Lucia Whalen.

I'm not familiar with this case. If they had a warrant to search for drugs, my impression from years ago was that they could basically look anywhere.

Generally they can't check anything without probable cause.

When our glorious former leader in the US redefined torture to allow rather barbaric treatment, the question was raised what lasting effects these had on people (for some legal reason). And everything I heard (I didn't read the research, but some of the people had done it) was that it was not at all predictable. Some people seemed normal after the worst, while others were scarred by the least worst. (One area where the effects were well known and that is solitary confinement. Despite these rather horrific effects being known, the practice continues. My recollection is that the effects of solitary with sensory deprivation, which is not legal but was used against detainees, is also well known and predictable.)

I know this isn't exactly on point since this story is a bit different.

I cant imagine the culture shock her and her children are facing today. The embarrassment, the humiliation of the conflicting emotions she has and what others must be telling her she should have. She eventually "loved" this man in a sick twisted way. She would have been 14 when she had the first child. That could mean she endured 3 years of rape and molestation before she had the life line that a child would provide.
