Frankly, it's not surprising that religious folks might not like this film, and it's not purely because of backwards thinking. There's quite a bit of twisting of history to meet current convenience going on here.

Movieguide.org, an influential site which reviews films from a Christian perspective, described Darwin as the father of eugenics and denounced him as "a racist, a bigot and an 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder". His "half-baked theory" directly influenced Adolf Hitler and led to "atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and genetic engineering", the site stated.

It's amusing to see atheists attempt to hold up Darwin as some kind of model, when he himself specifically rejected the idea of atheism, but it hasn't stopped them.

Lots of historically smart people held otherwise incompatible or at least tenuously compatible beliefs that we need to use history to justify, similarly to how we hold up Christopher Columbus as an example of enterprise and explorative wonder, or Thomas Jefferson as a paragon of equality and freedom.

Sure. But when someone points out that Jefferson owned slaves or that Columbus was pretty much just in it for the fame and money, no one calls them ignorant backwards thinkers and makes broad assumptions about their motivations. But, American filmakers reject a clearly biased, atheist focused misinterpretation of Darwin's life and beliefs for the crap it likely is, and it's automatically assumed that it's because all of America is fundamentalist religious.

This is the same Hollywood which had no problem putting "Last Temptation of Christ" on film, as well as a dozen or so other films which have pissed off the religious folks. If they're giving this one a pass, I doubt seriously that it's out of some fear of upsetting the religious folks. I'm going to go with "it's a crap film". I could be wrong of course, but I doubt it...

When has Hollywood ever erred on the side of "it's a crap film" when money is involved?

This film will either make them money or it won't, what's actually on the celluloid matters exactly zero to them.

Let's be honest here. A film about Darwin titled "Creation" is kind of a dead giveaway that there's going to be quite a bit of anti-creationism in the film.

What if we double-billed it with Expelled?

C'mon dude. When did Hollywood ever decide not to back a film because it was crap??

Video store shelves are full of crap Hollywood films.

Well, sure, but the larger point is that we ought not to care lots about what people thought then as part of their larger cultural paradigm, but should care more about how we can use the best bits of their omnibus, today, in our paradigm. I don't particularly herald Darwin because I'm not a Darwin scholar, but I've got no problem with conveniently forgetting whatever his faith might be to make evolution itself, which is much larger than Darwin now, more consistent with empiricism.

Well, if they think it's a crap film, they probably doubt it'll make them money.

Most crap films around these parts were made or financed by the studios who say "Wow, we sure did make a crap film but we're not about to just toss the money away and not release it." Purchasing a pre-made crap film is different.

Oh, that's not why you're ignorant so don't worry.

Calling people ignorant because they point out things you are too small minded to acknowledge doesn't reflect well on you.

What does pointing out Obama is half white have to do with having 'a platform' and why do you people get so hysterical when it's pointed out? It's just a simple factual observation.

Timelordwho wrote:

So? People were fed up of the Bush administration and wanted the Republican party out. I struggle to think of a single candidate that could have lost to McCain that night.

And frankly, this whole discussion is incredibly asinine. Paraphrasing: Your moooore racist, Nuh uh, youuuuuur more racist. You hate liiiike black people, No Yooou hate black people.

I think you need to read threads before replying to them. Or, better yet, maybe just watch other people post.

This isn't a real concern of mine, given the contest of our posts. But thank you for your worries.

It's because of Darwin. He's like the anti Christ to these people, as illustrated in that Christian website quote. They hate him and his theories about evolution.

The other films that don't portray Christianity in a good light don't have anything to do with Darwin so they don't see them as a threat, like they see evolution as a threat to everything they believe in.

You are just a stupid American with a large ***** and a tiny racist brain who goes all cowboy, voting for half-breeds and generally not using "u"'s in prescribed ways.

I don't think it is controversy. Bill Maher made a documentary that specifically existed to mock religion. Borat is more titillating than Darwin. South Park mocked religion on a regular basis. So does Family Guy. And hey, what about Inherit the Wind about the Scopes Monkey Trial.

It has to do more with the realization that most Americans wouldn't give a **** about a British costume drama about Darwin, save a vocal minority of religious zealots and a filmmaker that is looking to capitalize on controversy to publicize his film. In the end, it seems destined for straight to video where people will be more likely to see it at home b/c that's how alot of business is going anyways. The indies have been struggling more lately in terms of movie attendance.

I remember reading a website trying to talk me into moving to New Zealand, and one of their major talking points was that New Zealand is something like the world's 3rd largest producer of yachts. I was reminded of Flight of the Concords.
