The House neared a vote to admonish Rep. Wilson over his outburst during Obama's healthcare speech today.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gTWB1M9VPOte4M77spW7Z62NsGyQD9ANV0PG0

This is why the Democrats fail to maintain my support, and the country's, as a party. They always seem to engage in some stupid and petty self-destructing act which shifts public opinion to the Republicans.

This is one of those rare moments when I actually agree with a Republican about something.

Quote:
Republicans accused the majority party of hypocrisy and wasting the taxpayers' time.

Rep. Wilson has already apologized. He got a lecture on civility by Rahm Emanuel. A resolution will accomplish nothing, it is a waste of time and taxpayer money. With all of the problems we have in this country and good bills sitting on the floor doing nothing, why are they wasting our time with this crap? It's childish bickering.

Frankly, I would like for our Representatives to be able to yell at the President and call him a liar because we have had criminals like the Bush regime who were liars and deserved to be called out for it.

If the Republicans want to yell like idiots in the floor chamber and fail at their chances for re-election by acting the fool, let them, and don't jump right into the fray with them.

Meh. Minority House Leader John Boehner wasted a bunch of time reading (sections of) a 300 page amendment on the House floor. Not because he felt everyone needed to hear it but because it made for political theater and got it on the news.

Did I post about it? No, because who cares? It's not as though we pay these guys by the hour.

This is more theater. It might be theater that proves worthless for any actual gain but thinking that it's actually wasting precious time that they'd otherwise be using sagely considering and passing legislation requires a pretty pollyanna view of what happens in the House.

Also, you whine about the Democrats constantly. Pretending that this is what causes them to not have your support is absurd enough to count as theater in its own right.

You must have extremely selective hearing if this is the first time you've heard of petty, self-destructing acts committed by a politician.

He did apologize, and then turned around and used it as a self-aggrandizing fund raiser.

Real sorry, there, Dan.

I kind of agree with Soul Shaver here. The resolution may just be "more theater" as Joph suggestions, but why? Why couldn't the democrats just let it go and be the "bigger man" here? It's nothing more than a continuation of petty behavior on both sides. These people are supposed to be smart, sensible, well rounded representatives of America. Watching them behave like a kindergarten class is not only an observation of wasted time but also demoralizing to the people who had hoped for better.

I'm not going to get up in arms about it, but it is unnecessary.

Quote:
Beyond the controversy swirling around Wilson, there appeared to be some progress in resolving the issue he raised over illegal immigrants receiving federal subsidies to get health care. Democrats have insisted that their proposals specifically prohibit undocumented immigrants from getting assistance. But Republicans say the legislation needs stronger verification requirements.

At least it sounds like his "interruption" wasn't a complete waste (unlike the democrat's response being discussed here).

Quote:
Senators trying to negotiate a bipartisan deal are working to do just that, a step that could please some Republicans but also antagonize Hispanic lawmakers sensitive to rules making it harder for people to obtain health care.

Go figure. Stronger verification requirements might upset Hispanic law makers. Wonder why...

Because this kind of behavior from an elected official during formal event is unacceptable, and the message needs to be sent to anyone else in Congress thinking about heckling any President of the opposite party that it is frowned upon.

God, I wish someone had done this to GWB during a joint session of Congress while he was hyping up the war against Iraq. But the Dems were better behaved than that.

You can say whatever **** you want about the opposition party on your own time (yay free speech), but if you're in a formal assembly, you need to sit your *** down, shut up, pay attention, not twitter on your damn blackberry, and give the Commander in Chief a little respect.

And then after the assembly is over, you can go right back to calling him a "muslin kenyan" and tossing red meat to your constituents.

Because they thought there'd be a gain from it, obviously. More fund raising or a gain from keeping the story in the news or whatever. I'm not privy to what they thought that gain might be but obviously there thought there'd be one.

Saying that the Republicans are worse or that our elected officials wouldn't do anything productive with this time anyway isn't the point. We should expect more from our elected officials.

I actually just found out that Rep. Barney Frank is pretty much saying the same thing about this so kudos to him and the other Democrats that don't play to petty partisan bickering. Everyone knows that this particular behavior is frowned upon and a resolution won't somehow magically make people behave. All the Democrats are doing is hurting themselves politically which empowers Republicans.

I guess you could say that Wilson was indeed acting childish. So, I guess you could also argue that admonishing that behavior means they're trying to suppress future kindergartenish behavior.

This has no impact really on us, as a country really, except if perhaps our lawmakers fail to maintain enough decorum to get something done.

And that's why he apologized to Obama. He apologized, Obama accepted, it could of and should of been done right there. Someone did something silly, and they had to apologize.

And that's why he apologized. Much more than you would be likely to get out of a number of politicians on either side.

Who exactly decided this would be a good idea to ***** and moan for more apologizing instead of just moving on to more important matters?

When you say that this is why you don't support Democrats (heh) and that this resolution is waste of time & taxpayer money, I think that noting that this isn't a partisan thing but rather a Congress thing and that it's not "costing" anything extra is the point.

And I'm not saying that the Republicans are "worse" because of the previously cited stunt. Just that it happens all the time and acting surprised or shocked by it now displays a startling lack of knowledge in what happens in Congress. You should flip on C-Span more often.

But, yeah, it'd be swell if everyone just came to work, put in eight hours of honest-to-God legislatin' and then clocked out with a fully productive day behind them.

Well, it was based more on a House procedural matter than a "Are Obama's feelings hurt?" matter. I'll agree that the whole thing could have been skipped entirely and it didn't have to be acted upon but there was actual grounds to act on it.

It's the House, well some of the House, wanting to make a statement that this crossed the line of acceptable behavior. Big Deal.

...or go to the barrel full of pundits and find a gazillion other 'hidden' reasons for this latest twist in As the Gov Turns.

Hey did you know The Guiding Light, after 72 YEARS! of daily soap, is ending production.

The media is itching for stories to make the midterms competitive and counterbalance the Democrat's majority and this is front page material. Efficient politicians solving problems in Washington isn't exactly good "news." It makes the Democrats look like they are more concerned with playground politics than with actually solving problems.

They have a majority in Congress and a sitting President, what more can we give them to work hard to fix our problems? People are on the fence right now about Obama and the Dems and they are getting impatient and worried about healthcare and the deficit, which means they will be very sensitive and reactive to what is shown in the media about the political process. I can already see the Republican business machine picking up some of political momentum over this.

As opposed to screaming about Death Panels and omgsocialism? Well, at least this actually happened so maybe it's a step in the right direction for everyone.

I heard the audio from that exchange this morning. It cracked me up a little that "off the record" casual Obama sounds exactly like "On the record" Obama aside from the word "jackass".
