Digging up the pastFollow

A local chap who's into Metal Detecting discovered a 7th Century Saxon helemet cheek-shield (Decorated, ornate gold) in a field.

On digging further he's discovered about 1,500 gold and silver artifacts (about 11 lbs of gold & 6 lbs of silver) of amazing craftsmanship - Battle Crucifixes, Sword pommels, shield bosses, coins etc.

They're all from between 650 and 800AD (yet to be determined) and after valuation, likely to be worth between £2 and £6 Million ($3.5 to $11 Million US)

Under ancient law, it has been designated "Treasure Trove", so he splits the value with the farmer who owns the field where it was found.

There was that other large discovery a while back, too (Viking silver, if I recall). I guess it's a good year for amateur archaeology.



Do they own their own refinery, cutting out the middle man?
