Just one step but a potentially significant one.

We'll have to wait and see. Both whether more will follow, and whether or not the final draft will be riddled with polio.

It's doubtful more will follow until the final bill (and even not then) but it gives the Democrats a bit of cover. It would have been a lot harder without even nominal Republican support.

Interesting, when was the last time a republican voted for a healthcare reform bill?

Honestly?

SCHIP expansion had support from both parties when Bush vetoed it and again when Obama passed it. Prior to that, Bush's prescription reforms for Medicare had GOP votes. Whether that was good or bad is a separate debate.

Ultra-republicans seems pretty annoyed by this, and that's the main thing.

Snowe's reasoning was, "When history calls, history calls." Smart lady.

She's a Republican in a state that has slowly turned purple over the last few years, and while fellow Republicans are going to attack her hard over this, Democrats will not be able to use "She voted against healthcare reform!" in their attack ads next election cycle.

On that note, this is now officially the farthest any healthcare reform bill has gotten since 1912.

Sounds like she's being threatened.

But, isn't this the healthcare "reform" bill that sucks?

Lord willing, after it's reconciled with the Senate HELP Committee bill and the House bill, it'll suck less. Plus it's a foot in the door.

True. Steps forward are always a good thing. I want to see what the HELP committee does with it. That'll be interesting.

Since she voted for the bill, might we hope that at least one other female repug might see the light when the final bill is voted on?

There are few male repugs that I have any hope of bucking the party line and actually voting for something that will benefit Americans.

By voting for something she believes is in the best interests of her constituents. Yeah, that's some first class betrayal, there, Lou.

As this topic has been on here for about 3 and a half hours, and Varus has been posting for that entire time in another thread, why do I have a sneaky suspicion he's been holding off until he hears something from a conservative talking head?

Talking head: "Socialism!"
Varus: "SOCIALISM!"
Talking head: "Maine isn't a bastion of conservatism!"
Varus: "I'm a parrot! A parody! A parroty!"

We'll see if it's what they want when she runs for re-election. Plus it is Maine. Not like it's a bastion of conservatism or anything.
She'll be re-elected. Mainers love Snowe. Besides the ultra-conservatives around here are not paying any attention to health care while their babies are being threatened with teh ghey.

The majority of her constituents support a public option. She IS supporting the views of her voters.

As do a majority of Americans in nearly all states, once it's explained to them what the hell it is anyway.

Yeah, see, I knew that. I can't say I'm surprised that Virus didn't, though.

I just hope that the final health care reform bill will offer some sort of competition for the private insurance companies. I was watching Rachel Maddow last night, and the guy covering for her (she's sick apparently) reported that health insurance companies have stated that when the bill passes without the public option, they will be "forced" to increase their rates three fold. This makes no sense considering if the government passes a bill that requires all citizens to have health insurance, their profits will already go up as it is.

Why is socialism such a bugbear for you? There's nothing in the founding documents about capitalism being the bestest economic system ever.
