It'll look nice once the grass is kept up.

I really wanted to do my yard this year. But instead I focused on brand new windows and siding on the house. It seems that I won't get my landscaping done before the ground starts to freeze. I figured the house was more important than the yard right now.

The only thing I've been able to do is cut some trees down around my house to widen my yard.

Unfortunatly every single bit of green you see in that yard isn't gras, it's a healthy and robust weed. I had a blade of grass, but i think a slug ate it!

(I'm working on it)

yeah, the inside stuff definitly takes its toll, especially windows and sideing. But at least now they'll be done, and plenty of time to work on the yard!

Weeds won't even grow in my front yard right now. Except for the patch of dandelions that pops up in the middle every year. Other than that, it's just sand.

Much improved!

We discovered we qualify for an educator's home loan through Sallie Mae, which has us reconsidering our decision to hold off housebuying until we move to our permanent home. It'd have to be the perfect house for a bargain basement price for us to to it and give up our $465/month rent, though.

We did something similar this summer:

Dad and I had the block laid in 45 minutes, another hour for the caps, then the next day we filled with dirt and my wife planted. Turned out really well.

Yay! Walls!!

Heres the one I've been building for the last 2 weeks.

Her indoors wanted it so she would have a North facing hotspot for growing loadsa tomatoes in because the greenhouse is full of other things..

Turned out alright as well I reckon.

The gate behind it leads to the chicken run....

Every house in those pictures looks disturbingly similar. Have you been cloning things again?

2 questions.

Why didn't you go to the corner of the yard? Just curious.

And given the amount of rain you guys supposedly get up over there, did you consider/account for run off drainage?

He has a lovely wide footpath for run-off.

A couple of reasons. Cost of the bricks, need to reuse the existing bricks, and extending the wall all the way to the corner would have reduced sight lines from my drivway and i wouldn't be able to see as much while backing. That front section will eventually be covered in mulch and planted, so it might present better that way than it would flat. Extending the wall fully to the corner would have cost another $3k in bricks.

edit: as to the drainage, there is a 4 inch perforated drain pipe and a significant amount of geotextile fabric and 1/4" crushed stone behind the wall for drainage. The topsoil goes all the way to the wall at the surface, but if you go a few inches down there is a pretty robust drainage system
