Really? Have you watched baseball? It's like 45-second intervals of actual kinetic activity interspersed with 3 minutes of beer commercials.

What the hell baseball games are you watching?

45 seconds of game time with 3 secs intervals of activity interspersed with 3 minutes of beer commercials. What makes it great is that the entire 4 hour ordeal means little to nothing because there are 180 games in each season. Baseball is the biggest joke in sports.

Baseball: Hit a ball with some wood and run around in a circle before someone throws it to someone else.

Basketball: Bounce the ball while running and try to avoid letting the other team get it so you can throw it in a basket.

Football: Padding

On the other side:

Soccer: Trying to make the ball do what you want using only your feet all the while trying to keep other players from taking it from between your feet while you're running and trying to kick it at a goal defended by the only player who can use his hands.

and just because:

Rugby: Moving the ball to the end of the field on the other team's side, advertently being tackled to move the ball as far forward as possible, no padding.

Your american sports suck.

Why would we?

By the way, Driftwood's wrong, as usual. He also needs to do some research on the origin of basketball.

Yes, so roughly 1/6th of your team.

No, my sport loses. NFL.

All I was pointing out in that first post was that you can't say soccer isn't a sport, as twinkle toes was trying. It's one of the most physically demanding professional sports.

France got ridiculously lucky, we got the worst of the top seeded teams by far, South Africa. Doesnt mean we'll do anything, and we might still fail at the group stages, but yeah, we got lucky.

The US did pretty well too. I'd put money on them qualifying second, and facing Germany in the Second Round. Who knows, they might just make the Quarter Finals, Germany are not the team they once were.

Some groups look ridiculously hard. Brazil's group (Portugal, Ivory Coast, North Korea) and Germany's group (Serbia, Ghana, Australia) both look very close.

Will be fun Smiley: grin

Why did you pick Nigeria to go so far. I'm not much of a AFC watcher but I thought that both Ghana and Ivory coast were better sides.

Of course they won't.

Anyway, it's too early for predictions, what with injuries and loss of form and squad selection s still to come.

Still, I'm gonna go for Spain to win it, an African team to make the semis, and Rooney to get sent off at some point.

Well yeah, it's tradition...

The main problem for the US, really, is that Group D is really tough. So even if you top the group, the team you'll face in the second round will be very strong. Whether it's Ghana or Germany, I think it'll take some miraculous play for you guys to make the Quarters.

It would be amazing to make the quarters. I think it's going to take really strong play from the US to make the second round. After 2006 I'm trying not to get my hopes up to high.

Arsne Wenger came up with a good idea. The ref simply asks the player whether they handled the ball or not. If they lie as per the TV footage, then they get a very severe ban.

Quick and effective.

Spain or Brazil are so much stronger than the rest of the world cup teams I will be amazed if one or the other don't win it.

Or we just, you know, use video technology like there is in rugby and tennis.

I'm all for retroactively punishing players who dive/cheat, but I also think the game has far too many financial implications for it to be decided by some random guy standing 50 yards away from the action.

Spain and Brazil are always overrated. Not that they aren't in the top ten, but Spain will choke as always once they face a semi-decent team in the quarters or semis. Picking Brazil to win it all is too predictable and should not allowed. Portugal is the team to pick if you like spanish/brazilian type of play.

Denmark is vastly underrated, having topped a group that barely saw Portugal through and Sweden eliminated. Switzerland is also underrated.

For the AFC side, Nigeria has the experience and momentum (they have finished strong in the group stages) and a favorable draw to progress, coupled with other teams underestimating them. I also have Ghana making the second round.

BTW, the refs unofficially used replay to see Zidane's headbutt and eject him from the world cup FINAL with a few minutes to penalties. It would have been fair to do the same with Henry. This is a problem that needs to be addressed, I think instant replay should be official in the case of a goal scored or (possibly) a violent foul.

You talk about Spain buckling under the pressure and then pick Portugal? That's pretty rich.
