...but I felt this deserved its own.

Quote:
A Harvard history professor testified in San Francisco federal court today that procreation has never been the central purpose of marriage in the United States.

This, I feel, is a good start.

Gosh, I think that point has been made here before.

I don't recall ever hearing of a discussion regarding the purposes or variations of marriage in here.

She has three strikes against her anyway. She's female, she's educated (making her unqualified because she's been poisoned by peer-reviewed study), and she's been to an Ivy League school run by the liberal elite.

True. It's probably not a reliable analysis unless it comes from Chico State.

Make that two more strikes:

Quote:
She said African Americans were initially denied U.S. citizenship on the grounds that they could not marry Caucasians. Marriage, she testified, was a liberty right.

She said it was a right, and she brought up African Americans.

You know, it's been a punch line for years but I never realized how bad it probably is until I looked at their web site.

Yeah, that happens when the will of the majority crushes the rights of the minority. Call it justice, or call it a shame, either way, it works.

I was going to make another thread on this simply because the court case going on now is huge. The ramifications are monumental and I'm surprised it was attempted now (although not unhappy, mind you). The fact that Olson is involved on the side of same-sex marriage is fantastic.

This is a great article too:

The Conservative Case for Gay Marriage
Why same-sex marriage is an American value.

By Theodore B. Olson

A snippet from the article wrote:
Many of my fellow conservatives have an almost knee-jerk hostility toward gay marriage. This does not make sense, because same-sex unions promote the values conservatives prize. Marriage is one of the basic building blocks of our neighborhoods and our nation. At its best, it is a stable bond between two individuals who work to create a loving household and a social and economic partnership. We encourage couples to marry because the commitments they make to one another provide benefits not only to themselves but also to their families and communities. Marriage requires thinking beyond one's own needs. It transforms two individuals into a union based on shared aspirations, and in doing so establishes a formal investment in the well-being of society. The fact that individuals who happen to be gay want to share in this vital social institution is evidence that conservative ideals enjoy widespread acceptance. Conservatives should celebrate this, rather than lament it.

Yeah, I can't be bothered to log in most of the time. Besides, if one can argue with Smash every day, what's the need for posting?

Being charitable typically never leads to interesting Asylum threads, from my typically lurker perspective. Smiley: nod
