So for those of you that haven't been following the Tonight Show mess, Leno's show tanked like everyone but NBC predicted, and now they're bumping the Tonight Show back half an hour to give him a half hour show at the 11:30 time slot. In any case, Conan took the news with aplomb and wrote a pretty fantastic letter. Doesn't amount to a hill of beans in the current world situation, but it does make me wish his show was doing better in the ratings.

Quote:
People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over “The Tonight Show” in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004, I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my “Tonight Show” in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the “Tonight Show” to 12:05 to accommodate the “Jay Leno Show” at 11:35. For 60 years, the “Tonight Show” has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the “Tonight Show” into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The “Tonight Show” at 12:05 simply isn’t the “Tonight Show.” Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the “Late Night” show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard, and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of “The Tonight Show.” But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet, a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the “Tonight Show,” I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

It is all about Dave and Conan.
Leno was never funny to me, ever.

I think NBC will be doing another huge mistake if they move Conan's Tonight Show to 12:05, but NBC seems to know what is "best", right?

As a kid who simply watched all the show and had no knowledge of their history, I always considered The Tonight Show to be one of the worst offerings. Leno was by far one of the least funny and most annoying hosts. His skits and monologues always had the punchline trudging along for at least a quarter mile. I didn't know what kind of flexibility Conan would have in moving to The Tonight Show, whether he could make it the Conan O'Brien show in everything but name only, but I saw it as a step down for him.

I agree that Leno is useless. The reception his new show received makes it obvious and shaking up this long-standing program structure just to re-accommodate his sorry *** is a horrible idea. Conan is making a tough and, I think, correct decision with this ultimatum.

Having said all that, I've always preferred Letterman's show (never really watched Carson) and for some reason Jimmy Kimmel is always on here ("we" rarely ever change the channel from ABC) though I prefer Conan and Fallon to him.

I like Leno, but he really shouldn't have put up with the prime time act. He should have bolted to ABC last year when he got the chance and let Conan have his show.

There's really not much that can be done in a half hour. That's what, a monologue, a commercial and a 5 minute interview or comedy skit?

Yeah, the problem as I see it is that Leno isn't doing anything new that would tempt an audience to watch. His current show was a rehash of TS bits and standards. Hell, he even took the band along. He's essentially just sucking up the news lead-in.

People don't remember he floundered as well. No one watched Leno after Carson (who, if you haven't ever watched, you should). It took the OJ Simpson trial and the dancing Itos/Marcia Clarks for his ratings to soar to what NBC considered acceptable. Conan's right when he says he wasn't afforded a fighting chance, but he was very biting and funny about it last night.

That said, Dave is funnier but I soured on him after the whole "whoops, I slept with some women, now let's not talk about it" deal.

All that said, Conan was hilarious and tragic during last night's monologue.

Nah. If you don't watch any TV then you're effectively meaningless to the TV people. They're mainly upset when you do watch TV but you're watching a different network.

Man, you know, NBC can do nothing right. They are even fucking up their late night schedule, the last part of their schedule that got decent ratings. I think that Conan is doing the right thing by leaving this sinking ship and I think that Leno is now tainted--I think he'll lose viewers.

Oh and Leno was attractive to a CBS demographic, meaning people who are Baby Boomers and older. They watch NCIS and get angry at email.

If you didn't catch it, here's a run down of last night's late night shenanigans.

With the sole exception of Leno's show, this is the best late night I've seen in years.

Also, Conan isn't actually quitting...yet. He said he won't participate in the Tonight Show if they move it's time. It's up to NBC to decide what to do now.

Having Conan at 12:05 would have been nice since I could have caught it right after the Daily Show and Colbert Report. I like Conan, but not having TiVO I'm pretty much always going to watch Colbert over him at the 11:30 time slot.

I honestly haven't watched either of their shows in years. I used to, but since they do the same jokes every night for a month, it got old fast. Basically what I'm saying is, I didn't care about Leno and Conan before they got new jobs and I certainly don't care about them now.

I kind of grew out of liking Jimmy Kimmel, but his show last night was hysterical. He spent the entire show as Jay Leno, prosthetic chin & all, making horrible jokes that were always followed by a stupid guitar riff.

It was a hoot.

Kimmel continued to go on Jay's show last night on his "10 @ 10" segment and pretty much insulted him over and over about what he wants to do to Conan's time slot. Really worth watching on Hulu, you can clearly see Leno nervous and wanting to rush the whole ordeal because of it.
