Is the word "panties" insulting or degrading?
I'm a male and I say "yes":3 (2.7%)
I'm a female and I say "yes":0 (0.0%)
I'm a male and I say "no":79 (70.5%)
I'm a female and I say "no":30 (26.8%)
Total:112

This poll is only about using the word to directly refer to the appropriate undergarments in a conversational sense, not trying to insult men by suggesting they wear panties, etc.

That's how I determine male undergarments vs female undergarments. Mine are not underwear, they are bra and panties. Males wear underwear.

While I'm used to the word "underpants" in Oz, and was at first bemused to come across the word "panties" from Americans, I quickly became beguiled by the charming abbreviation, and now affectionately think of them as "panties" in my own head.

It sounds to me like an infantilism of "underpants" that might have first been used by adults talking to very young children, but I don't see why adults shouldn't use the cute version. Things like this can be very different person to person, though.

My mother used to use the words "boobs" and "boobies" around me, to describe breasts, and it always felt like fingernails screeching down a blackboard. I very firmly asked her several times to use "breasts" instead, and got her trained to a different vocabulary around me eventually.

What else would you say, assuming you're not talking specifically about a thong or some such?

Undergarments is a bit Victorian. Underwear is generic. Briefs can mean several things as well.

A female friend of mine always refers to the bodacious fun bags* as "boobs," and it still weirds me out, because I have always called them breasts and think of "boobs" as either immature or crude. Mostly immature; if I was going for crude, it would likely be "tits" (which is fine when dirty talking but kinda rude otherwise, IMO). Boobs just sounds childish to me.

Edit: I usually say underwear, but have no issue with saying panties.

What I get from this thread is that there is a 5:4* ratio of males to females in the asylum.

"Dame Drawers"

I've occasionally heard of women being offended by the term but have no idea of how large or small such a sentiment is.

I've always considered womens' underwear "panties", but when I'm speaking of mens' underwear, I'll often use "boxers" or "briefs" to differentiate. To me, "underwear" means pretty much everything you wear underneath your main outfit, and includes socks and t-shirts.

Chones.

I don't find the word offensive, but I hardly ever use it. I like "underoos."

I also like saying "draws."

Yup. Drawers or underwear for women bring to mind granny undies that go up to your boobs (ok I had to after the comments above) and could carry its own zip code.

Panties is where its at.

This, but the other way around because I'm a male. Also I underwear would be changed to Boxers.

Landslide much? I really wonder who could ever find that offensive. On a related note, I sometimes unconsciously replace panties with pantsu.

I refuse to use any infantilized words in dirty talking but panties still work for me when I do. Interesting, isn't it?

I ususally call my undies, undies. Panties seems a more refined word though.

I just contributed to a 'favorite name' thread at my gaming forum with the character name "Gigglepanties". It makes me giggle.

I need to try that line sometime!

I'd just rather throw meat around than sound like a child having time of his life:
"It's my pinky-winky! What does baby want me do with pinky-winky?" That kind of stuff. My ex spoke like that in the sack and it made me want to strangle her. ****, now you're gonna figure out what she wanted to do with the pinky...

I thought "panties" was just a way of being more specific in regards to which undergarments you were referring to. "Underwear" is generic. When speaking about women, it is (typically) a bra and panties, as Mistress Darqflame stated earlier. For men, it is (typically) either boxers, briefs, or boxer briefs.
