German government warns against using MS Explorer

The German government has warned web users to find an alternative browser to Internet Explorer to protect security.

The warning from the Federal Office for Information Security comes after Microsoft admitted IE was the weak link in recent attacks on Google's systems.

Microsoft says the security hole can be shut by setting the browser's security zone to "high", although this limits functionality and blocks many websites.

However, German authorities say that even this would not make IE fully safe.

Let's face it, even MS fanbois get quiet when challenged about IE and it's weaknesses. How refreshing that a government will advise its citizens what informed internauts have been advising each other for a while.

I've not used IE for years. By being the most dominant browser it also became the prime target for attacks. You used to be fairly safe by running a Mac and Safari simply because it was not worth the investment in time for hackers but even that is changing.

The problem is, if everyone stops using IE, the hackers will switch to the most popular browsers that remain. If google becomes dominant with Chrome and their mobile OS, expect the hackers to be there in force Smiley: nod

I switched to Firefox with its inbuilt spell-checker out of self-defence years ago.

I'd use FF exclusively if not for the damned issues with Flash. I almost always have to open an IE window, if not IE itself, for sites like MTV and Hulu.

Are you using an addon such as noscript? Do you have the latest version of flash? I'm using FF3.5 and have absolutely no flash issues, specifically on those sites as well.

3.0.11
I think someone else told me to go to an earlier version because I did install Flash, but apparently some cluster happened where it would download and install, but never uninstall the old versions.

It shouldn't be too much trouble to save your bookmarks file and transfer over to 3.5, or even completely reinstall 3. Without knowing more about what types of issues you are having, that should fix your problem.

Just did. Works awesome. Thanks! The only issue I have is that Adblock doesn't seem to be compatible with this version of FF, but then again Adblock may have been the reason Flash wasn't working right to begin with.

Are you using 3.5? adblock is definitely compatible with that version. If it's an older version of FF, then it is highly likely that it is still compatible.

What I'm thinking occurred AtomicFlea, is that you isntalled either adblock or noscript into fireflox and then never unblocked flash. By default, noscript catches everything and blocks it. I think adblock by default allows all, but it's possible you accidentally blocked flash.

I've actually stopped using noscript. I really don't visit any questionable websites and having to unblock EVERYTHING was wearing me out. I use Adblock, though.
