So no one here, besides myself of course, has done anything in the last year to improve the lot of their neighbors.

Why am I not surprised.

Most people give to charities and help out in the community in an effort to make a difference, not to brag about it on the internet.

Some of us go further, and support the distribution of some of our own wealth to those who need it.

It's what Jebus would do.

Actually, I have. I suppose I just didn't feel the need to brag about it on an internet forum for it to have value.

What if it's a hot tub? I can improve the gene pool when the neighborhood ladies get knocked up.

The foundation fo conservatism is personal responsibility. Something Democrats don't believe in.

Perhaps because it never works ever, or perhaps because the entire concept of any government runs completely contrary to the idea of personal responsibility. It's probably a good thing that personal responsibility isn't actually the foundation of conservatism and is just a superfluous tumorous growth a minority of the ideology has cultivated.

UnRegardless personal responsibility has nothing to do with helping people.

I like bragging about it. I just wished it'd guilt some of you into doing more for your community. I mean if a loser like myself can find time to give away free vegetables, that he's grown from his garden, to his neighbors surely you can do something.

The bible instructs us not to brag about it. General societal norms point to the fact that people who help just to help and not to brag are better thought of. So you're boxed in from both sides.

So varrus, it's very nice to give away vegetables to your neighbors, do you also supply your nearby soup kitchens?

Never ever? Sure it does. Of course, like I said, liberals don't believe anyone should be held accountable for the choices they've made.

Wait a second... Varus is counting giving away vegetables as "improving the neighborhood"? Fuck, I was whipping spaghetti squash and tomatoes into the open windows of passing cars all summer and fall just to get rid of the damn things. I didn't know this was building my conservative credentials as well! Shit, and here I was counting other things I did.

Jophed,

How much of your time did you donate to your neighbors last year? What did you do?

Give me some more ideas oh great one. You know how unimaginative I am.

What is it with people who feel the need to talk about their donations and beneficence?

Oh I remember now. FUcking gits.

Matt 6:3-4 "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

You know what? Shut your stupid yap.

It's not a matter of belief; it's that it achieves nothing. Blaming people for their situation regardless of whether they caused it or not does nothing to change the situation. The essence of personal responsibility is inaction and noninterference. If your kid is being beaten to death before your eyes, personal responsibility would have you do nothing to stop it. All you could do is say "it was my son's fault," after the event occurred.

I realize you don't think that is what personal responsibility entails, but that lack of understanding is probably why you support the idea to begin with.

Having public schools is an affront to personal responsibility. Having private schools is an affront to personal responsibility. Hospitals, police, and the military are all creations which reject the idea of personal responsibility. I shift the responsibility of providing those services to someone else. I shift the responsibility of regulating and monitoring those services to someone else. I diffuse the responsibility of paying for those services to other people. Every government agency, private business, and community organization is a rejection of personal responsibility.

Oddly, I thought of earlier verses:

Quote:
Matthew 6:1-2:
Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
