So Vancouver should declare darwin as their mascot.

Before they've even had the opening ceremony, the frost-loving ice-fetishist so-called 'athletes' are offing themselves.
Quote:
Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili dies after crash

The death of a luge competitor who left the track at high speed has cast a shadow over the Winter Olympics in Canada ahead of the opening ceremony.

Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili's sled flipped and he smashed into a steel pole at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

An Olympic official later confirmed the 21-year-old had died as a result.

Training was immediately suspended after the accident, which happened just hours before the ceremony to open the 21st Winter Games in Vancouver.

Kumaritashvili's sled struck the inside of the track's last turn during his sixth and final training run, sending his body into the air and over a concrete wall.

His sled remained on the track, and the visor from his helmet appeared to continue down the ice.

Now coloUr me risk-averse, but I made a conscious decision some years ago not to travel at 90mph on a tiny bit of metal.

I wonder how many people out there are going to think that this guy is an American.

Seems fine to me.

I was thinking more along the lines of people who don't know the difference between Georgia the state and Georgia the country.

Reminds me of the ill-advised practice of greasing skateboard, inline skate wheels when we were kids so that we'd go down the hill just a bit faster. Turns out that there are, in fact, unsafe speeds.

Then again, the argument can be made that consequence (or fear there of) leads to excellence.

EDIT: By the by, I thought Georgia was part of the Soviet Union. When did the Soviets let them go?

I think as part of the Balkan war fallout. They're still squabbling over bits of territory, and that nearly came to a head not too long ago.

I've always said that I wanted to see some jerk rack himself at 100mph in the luge.

Now that I have, though, I wish they'd stop showing it on TV.

I'm still trying to figure out what the steel pole was doing there?

Did anyone get his thoughts on getting hit by a guy doing 90 miles an hour and flying through the air?

They took an informal pole and the judges decided he really made an impression...

Ugh.

One of the poles lifting the torch in the opening ceremony failed to lift. They had to go with a 3-legged torch.
