Canada to mothball half of coastal fleet

OTTAWA, May 14 (UPI) -- Canada's navy says money problems have forced it to mothball half its fleet of vessels used to patrol the country's Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

The navy said it would leave several of the ships at dock in Halifax, Nova Scotia and at Esquimalt, British Columbia, and strip them of their crews because it lacks the funding to operate them all, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

"Upon close examination of resources and priorities, this was deemed necessary to safeguard and optimize our operational capability, both now and in the future," navy spokeswoman Denise LaViolette said.

The navy would continue to modernize its other ships and refit its submarines with "stable and predictable" funding from the federal government, LaViolette said.

The decision about the coast patrol vessels would leave three of the 12-ship fleet on each coast. The others would not be scrapped, the navy said, but put in long-term storage. When asked about potential invasion from militaristic Washingtonians in heavily armed rowboats, LaViolette was dismissive of their chances, claiming that the mighty Canadian Beaver would take up the slack in coastal defense.

"Never mess with the Dam Beavers.", LaViolette said.

How much funding it would take to keep the whole fleet active or how much would be saved by the reduction was not announced by the navy, the CBC reported.

Actually they changed their minds. No mothballing, to paraphrase "the govt said to find the money so I guess we will."

Navy was formed in 1910 ish I think.

I do remember spending some time aboard a Canadian destroyer up in Pictou, Nova Scotia back around 1984... but they had a bar on their ship, so I don't really remember much about it.

Really? Our Navy had an impact there? I thought our infantry just hitched a ride with the Brits on that one.

We had the 3rd largest navy in the world for WW2. After the war we followed the general worldwide trend and downsized military operations. We were very good at killing subs.

I've worked with the Chanuks Navy, their fleet is fairly old and outdated but only in comparison to the major world Navy's.

Half of Brazilian and Chilean navy's for example is made up of old Royal Navy ships.

Actually, you don't need a Navy because the US would be obligated to step in in the unlikely event that you were attacked. Our own national security and all that.

Unless we thought the invading force would make better neighbors. Personally, I'd like to see more dutch people on this continent.

No, it's because everyone likes and/or is apathetic towards us. America's paranoia is a nice fallback plan for us though.

And teh fact that Canada are in NATO and thus the US and other member nations would be obliged to leap to their defence.

Actually, a lot of Dutch people migrated to Canada after WW2.
I think there's a fair bit of family there that I barely know of. (grandparents siblings/cousins and their offspring that moved to Canada)

Navy is more of an offensive force than a defensive one. We don't attack other nations so our navy is really just for coast guard duties these days. As was mentioned earlier our navy was quite good when we were attacking other nations.

We're more than capable of defending ourselves via air and ground forces in the very unlikely event of an invasion.

All these Canadian Navy jokes and not a single mention of a Canoe in a joke.

I don't want to beat a dead horse or anything but we used to have a better caliber of posters in the Asylum back in the day.
