Sure there's a lot of talk about about the U.S. House member who has received the most contributions from oil companies defending BP and labeling of the investigation a "shakedown," but that's just the MSM avoiding the real story!

"I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown."

Are we so numbed to the omnipresent rape of our whimsical tongue that we allow conspicuously meaningless phrases like "first proportion" to spew forth from the mouths of some of our highest elected officials? And what about the news agencies for repeating this obscenity without even the slightest comment? There are no words for my shame.

I thought it seemed weird, but yes, I'm numb to the idiocy of people in general, so it didn't strike me as something worth discussing.

He's been forced to apologize for apologizing.

Apparently, it was turning into a PR disaster, so . . .

of the first/highest degree
of the first/highest order

of the highest/greatest proportion

Although I still think the proportion one is a bad idiom, even when used "correctly."

Are you really acting like this is the first time in history a politician has misused the English language?

If you believe elected officials are the smartest people in the room, I have some sad news for you indeed.

You need to reevaluate your earnestness detector. (Hint: Exclamation points used by sane people are usually a tip-off).

Deep dish?

Tommy guns, zoot suits, and hilariously overplayed south-side accents.

Or maybe he was muttering "Bears... Bears... Ditka..." under his breath.

And without ketchup.
