Suppose they'll renounce their citizenship or will this be some lame thing where they come running to the US crying the first time a bored pirate visits with an RPG?
Edit: Despite the article in the OP, the Seasteading Institute's site
sounds a lot more like they're just playing "country" without actually breaking loose and declaring themselves an independent nation.
Quote:
The international and national laws that affect seasteads can be complex. The applicable law depends on the citizenship of the seastead residents, the location of the seastead, the country under which the seastead is flagged, and international maritime treaties, to name a few.
This complexity raises a number of uncertainties. Under what conditions will countries interfere with a seastead's internal affairs? What legal considerations give rise to unique business opportunities? What laws and taxes apply to a seastead resident?
To answer these questions, our law and politics program investigates existing laws as they apply to seasteads, internal governance strategies (constitutions, courts, and police forces), and the legal opportunities and risks involved in operating a seastead.
Our current focus is on the issues necessary for the first seasteads to succeed, though we also perform some limited research on long-term legal issues, such as seastead sovereignty.
