DoD-AF, Material Command to be exact. Depot maintenance for F-15/F-16/A-10/KC-135/C-130/H-60. Foward deployed maintenace unit, so we are small to begin with. Not like the complexes back stateside that average 17,000 employees.
Just to give an example for staffing; we had 1 person in each of the following slots 7 years ago: Admin, Manpower, Financial, IT Systems, Tech Data/Engineering, Process Improvement, Commander's Sec, Maint. Exec.
Now we have Commander's Sec+Admin, IT Systems+Tech Data, Manpower+Financial, PI duties were split to Quality and the 3 flight supervisors (not working so well), and Maint. Exec duties split between the commander and the 2 maint flight supervisors (again, not working).
We are slated to lose the Cammander's Sec soon, no one has an idea who's going to pick up those duties. Some of the oddball programs that the AF requires units to maintain could be handed down to the technicians, however the unions keep that from happening.
If sequestration is enacted, our unit will most likely be closed down and the AF attempt to relocated our functions to stateside units. That will cause at a minimum 7-10 delay (most likely 30-day based on past experience) in turn-around time for repair requests from active flying units within the region. If it's not closed, we won't be seeing any new test stations for a number of years. Most of our equipment/test stations were developed/purchased back in the '70/'80s and has been slated for replacement. There is newer equipment available, the AF just hasn't purchased it yet.
Now granted, I do realize that congress is referring to all federal employees and not just DoD. However, the cuts tend not to happen evenly accross the board. On top of the fact the DoD seems to take the bulk of the hits when they do come around. Don't get me wrong, there is "fat" there to trim. Most of the roughly 1200 positions cut at Ogden ALC were vacant, and only about 120-ish were actually affected. Most of those were relocated to other bases so those people were given the option, leave or re-located. Most retired.
