Apparently, in the US the ban on Horse Slaughterhouses was lifted last year.
The Human Societies Horse Slaughter Petition Act says....

Is it less humane to kill and eat a companion animal than it is to kill and eat a traditional food stock animal that was raised for the purpose of slaughter?
