And it's not like the opposition to Russian hosting is limited to their human rights violations with homophobia. It's also heavily connected to the behavior of the government in general, particularly with control of information, suppression of opposition, and obviously-corrupt voting systems.
The homophobia just became a really easy, really apparent problem that was particularly easy to latch onto and speak out against Russia using. It's a lot harder to do that when you're complaints are about systems that are much more abstract and complicated.
It's also much easier to talk about human rights in specific reference to how you are hurting a group of people, when it lets you sidestep the more direct, politically-problematic language of, you know, accusing Putin of fraudulent voting practices that are allowing him to feign democracy while ensuring his own stay in power.
