I wouldn't be surprised if Google DID have a **** site option, at least through some company under its control.
I think the bigger issue is setting up any kind of realistic tiering option.
This is a gaming site. Google would do best by providing ads that are most likely to be attractive to gamers (gaming-related ones, obviously, but also ads suitable to the site's demographic). But forums like the Asylum really break the mold there - a lot of the ads they want to run they don't want to run alongside a discussion about whether or not condoms are best for the **** industry.
Is having a "adult content possible" tier really going to help Google's profits? Probably not. Particularly not when the website doesn't really have another advertising option in the first place.
And the thing is, Google also needs to establish their brand name, just like the companies advertising through them. Google has decided it doesn't want its brand associated with smut. I'm not surprised.
Not saying I'm happy about this at all. But I'm not remotely shocked. From a business perspective, it's smart. As a consumer, I lose out. But Google has to market their adsense service to businesses, not the people visiting the website. We're the product, not the customer.
