I'm going to stick with this being the patented Smasharoo "If I tear those around me down, it'll make me feel bigger/better" bit. Pretty obvious psychology involved really. You're just not that complex.
Having hung out with Smash I'll agree that he's not "that complex" but he's not suffering an inferiority complex either. Egomania, perhaps
Most people with outwardly egotistical behavior are actually suffering from feelings of inferiority and inadequacy. True egomaniacs don't talk about how great they are, they just do things and assume they will always succeed and/or that everyone will go along, because it doesn't enter their minds that they might be wrong. When someone talks constantly about how superior they are, but never actually seems to do anything to show it, it's usually a cover for inferiority. In Smash's case, the ratio of over the top claims made to arguments/evidence presented is something like 100:1.
And before you say it (cause I know you will), I *always* at least present an argument. Others may not agree with it, but I always take the time (too much in some people's opinion) to construct some kind of argument in support of whatever I'm saying. Smash nearly never does. He just declares himself to be right and then moves on. When called on it, he refuses to even construct an argument in his defense, and usually just starts attacking the other poster (over say grammar for example). You can't possibly have missed this pattern.
Now, that doesn't absolutely prove anything. And hey, everyone's got some kind of interesting psych stuff rattling around in their heads. But it's interesting how, in the midst of a seemingly innocent and trivial conversation about job titles and whatnot, he went out of his way to attack me on something that was frankly a really minor (and completely accurate) statement about engineering titles. That's a strange thing to choose to get worked up over. Because I said that I have a familiarity with the engineering world, he felt the need to challenge me? Given statements I've made over the years about my own work experience, what I said was not even remotely controversial. Was it?
