So my mom called me today. Me and her have had a joint bank account for years; left over from my childhood. I haven't accessed it for years, but she had been going into the account on occasion and depositing or moving around a few bucks just to keep it active. She asked me if I wanted to update my contact information as it still had an old address and what not. I told her not to worry about it, just take any money she had put in there and close the account. I mean I hadn't touched it in forever, and didn't see any reason to have it opened any longer. She was quiet for a second and then replied "but you have like $5,000 in there."
Wait... what?
My first thought was that it was left over from old previous saving accounts or little bits that had been added over time. So I said, well for goodness sake at least move it to the savings account so it's earning a little interest. She did that and we got to talking, turns out she never put any money in the account either. She'd seen the money in there for years and never mentioned anything as she though we might have put it there while we were moving or something. I told her I never put that much money in there.
So she started looking through the account history and old statements and such. Turns out back in 2009 some place called Sam's home repair deposited $5,000 into the account, and no one ever noticed. Both of us were clueless and apparently ol' Sam never came calling for the cash I guess.
Anyway, mom is on the way down to the bank to ask them about it. So this is new to me, what happens now?
Thoughts?
