Look, if you actively boycott a place because of an issue you'll get a backlash from supporters on "their" side (qv Chic-Fil-A).
Those things I mentioned are taking a page from Restaurant 103, the 10:1 rule. If service (or whatever), etc is great, out of 10 happy customers 1 will tell
an person about the place. If service is poor that one customer will tell
ten people it's terrible.
Point being that if you think a place is behaving terribly and won't change, some might be inclined to drive them out of business. What I wrote is a method to do so.
So..."I hate Bob's Cakes because they hate teh gheyz" is not as effective in the long run as "I hate Bob's Cakes because they're overrun with roaches and cooties".
