Nah. Not that it's not tempting but I figure that if I bother reading the polls, I shouldn't mess with the data.

My friends in Germany were asking me "how Trump could be winning the election". I told them we were just following orders.

Maybe I shouldn't laugh. By the time we elect Trump, Germany might be on the way to having an extremist right wing party in charge again. Smiley: tongue

To be fair exploding instantly sounds like a much better fate than lingering in Guantanamo for 5-6 years before hanging yourself.

Must be an election cycle:
Idaho Spokesman-Review wrote:
Idaho lawmakers ratcheted up the abortion debate Thursday, as one state representative said he believes rape and incest are unlikely to result in pregnancy, and a party-line vote backed one of two bills championed this year by anti-abortion groups.
[...]
During the hearing Rep. Pete Nielsen, R-Mountain Home, said, “Now, I’m of the understanding that in many cases of rape it does not involve any pregnancy because of the trauma of the incident. That may be true with incest a little bit.”
[...]
He added, “I read a lot of information. I have read it several times. … Being a father of five girls, I’ve explored this a lot.”

I don't really get what all the Republican horror and backpedaling from this is about. How many times have I had to listen to "Oh, you support MURDERING BABIES??" when Republicans talked about abortion? So, if they feel that "murdering babies" is terrible and wrong, why NOT punish the woman who decided to go have a baby murdered? Why would you only go after the doctor? That's like arresting a hit man but not the person who hired him to murder someone.

I suppose it's like the "rape and incest" exemption. "Oh, it's absolutely MURDER to have an abortion but it's okay to murder babies conceived from rape. They... don't really count?"

Votes; more women voters than babies or abortion-performing doctors. Never piss off a subgroup with significant voting power.

Oh, I know that. Just noting the dissonance between the supposed fire of their convictions and what they'll actually espouse.

Well that said it would have been amusing for them to try to argue that around 28% of voting age women (thank you google!) are people who needed to be punished as criminals.

I concur. I was wondering a similar concept. I'm not a fan of abortion, but clearly the GOP is trying to have it both ways. They are trying to create a "middle ground" to woo people over. I was glad to hear on MSNBC someone pushing back to the notion of "being a victim". How can a person who made choices (not rape, deserted, etc), be a "victim". The GOP is merely going as far as they can go with statements without losing their base. Apparently, wanting to charge the women offends enough of the base that it has become an exception. Just like incest, when exactly does this happen?

Aye, but he can't live in the alternate universe of the Republican primaries forever. Democrats certainly won't mind playing quote ad nauseum come the general election, and female swing voters are going to have a hard time swallowing the idea that 1/4 of them are criminals.

Wait. 1/4 of women have had abortions?

We REALLY need to start teaching idiots about condom use.

I googled "what percentage of women will have an abortion?" and the top hit was "Summary: It is estimated here that, as of 2008, about 28% of U.S. women ages 15-64 have had abortions." A quick look through the other top hits didn't give me anything that grossly contradicted it. Feel free to link some more accurate numbers if you find them though, I didn't work too hard on it TBH.

Edit: The top hit, for what it's worth.

I can assure you that the failure rate of those (and really most common birth control methods) over the lifetime of a long term relationship is sufficient to yield multiple opportunities for an abortion.

Here's what I found with a just as lazy search. Edit: You know, I have to wonder what exactly they're counting as an abortion. Guess I'm gonna have to do more research.

Sounds accurate enough. It was 1-in-3 based on the 2008 rate which may have fallen, but probably not by so much that 1-in-4 (25%) is going to be significantly off. The actual number probably being something less graceful like 9-in-32
